TimG_SC
Hello, I recently started reloading and so far I have only been loading 9mm. I just ordered a STI Trojan in 45acp and am about to start loading 45's. I see here that "Clays" seems to be pretty popular for loading 45acp. Is this Hogdon Clays powder? I am looking for a soft shooting load so what othere powders would you recomend if not Clays? I plan on loading 230 grain FMJ's initially(I already ordered some from Precision Delta) and probably some 147 grain lead loads for practice. Do the 230's sound good or would you recommend 200 grain bullets? Thanks in advance

Skydiver
Although I prefer the 230gn bullets, most people shoot the 200gn bullet because of the faster cycling.
calvary45
I prefer the 200s, the impulse is snappier as the 230s has a sort of slower spongy feel. Get some sample pack of 185,200,230s to see what you like and works the best for you. Also if using clays make sure you use hogdon clays and not hogdon universal clays. Making a mistake about which powder is which can make a significant difference in performance (and probably safety). See in this chart where Clays (#10) is much faster burning than Universal (#32): http://www.hodgdon.com/burn-rate.html As small aside, I accidentally loaded a batch of .45 with Titewad instead of Titegroup. I'm glad I didn't blow up my gun, as well as my friend's gun for whom I was also loading for.
