Singlestack
How much torque is needed for stock bolts for bolt action rifles? And is it different for rimfires? About 60~65 INCH pounds for Remmy's. I have no idea if it's different for RF.
Braxton1
John is right on the 60-65 inch pounds. That should be in the ballpark for most all rifles, but consistency is paramount in torquing the screws.
RePete
50-55in-lbs if the stock is wood and without metal pillars. I use this torque value if the stock is plastic without pillars. The above is used for 'glass stocks that are pillar bedded. Edited February 13, 2012 by RePete
ak47traxx
Thanks for the info. I just took apart a Marlin XT-17 and it has a synthetic stock. There are 2 bolts through the stock and one of them attaches to the barrel. The other toward the rear of the action. I've emailed Marlin but haven't heard back from them yet. Any idea what the torque range is for these?
Guest
I have a Savage MkII BTVS .22lr and for that the torque is only about 20 in-lb on the stock-to-action screws. Also have an old Remington Scoremaster and that is about the same. If you are looking mainly for rimfire info, rimfirecentral.com is the BrianEnos.com of the rimfire world...in other words there is a boatload of info there about stuff you never even knew existed or knew you needed! Graham Smith
As the others said, it depends. Stock material, pillars, bedding all effect how much torque you can use. Here's a good general reference: Stockys
