BENTNBROKEN
Reading some other post about brass and it makes me question my understanding of brass identification. How do you know a case is swagged primer pocket? anyone have a picture?
acekc
You're probably more concerned with identifying a crimped primer pocket. A swaged primer pocket is a formerly crimped primer pocket that has had the crimp removed by pressing the brass in the crimp outward towards the outside of the case. A reamed primer pocket is a formerly crimped primer pocket that has had the crimp removed by reaming the brass in the crimp off/out of the case entirely. The following link has a variety of pictures that should prove useful, and the pages that the pictures come from will probably have helpful information as well. http://images.google.com/search?tbm=isch&hl=en&source=hp&biw=1206&bih=1012&q=crimped+primer+pocket&gbv=2&oq=crimped+primer+pocket&aq=f&aqi=g1g-mS2&aql=&gs_sm=3&gs_upl=889l3780l0l3875l23l17l1l0l0l0l245l1554l3.8.1l12l0
mcracco
A crimped primer pocket will have a concentric ring around the primer pocket and the leading edge of the hole will be somewhat sharp. Compare that to non-crimped commercial brass where the lead-in to the primer pocket has a smooth radius. The crimp can be removed by cutting which will give you a 45 degree lead-in or swaging which will produce a decent radius.
Chills1994
you can see the crimp ring or crimp circle around the primer in this pic. Your other two clues are: 1. the NATO headstamp sign, near the top, it is a circle with a plus sign or cross hairs in the middle 2. the "LC" stamp which stands for the Lake City Arsenal where Federal/ATK ammunition makes a bunch of our military ammo.
