GregInAtl
I've had my 550B for about a week now. I think I pretty well am getting the hang of it although it has been a frustrating week. Most of the problems I am having involve priming. At the moment the problem I am having is that when there is a primer in the primer cup and a case in the shell plate, the operating arm won't go all the way forward to seat the primer. If I remove the case from the shell plate, I can then push the operator arm all the way to ccompletion and the primer punch pops up out of the primer cup with a primer on the end of it as it should. It's just that the arm won't go all the way forward as it should when there is a case present. It appears to me like the case is blocking the primer punch from extending upward. Has anyone else had this issue. What is your take on it?
OzzieF
Are you using military brass? Crimped primer cups make it very difficult to put new ones in sometimes. Also make sure the case is centered and held in place by the "paper clip" wire. If that is loose, it will also cause some primer issues from not lining it up. benos
Greg, I'm not sure why a case in the Shellplate could be causing that. Maybe Gary (dillon) will have something for us on that. But in the meantime, here's some things to double check: 550 Priming Assembly Adjustment Notes: Thoroughly polish frame, wherever priming slide touches it, with green Scotch Brite. (Approx. every 3000 rounds) Wipe off Primer Slide with solvent or alcohol. Leave it all dry. At rest primer slide adjustment: Set so that one primer, dropped down the tube, goes all the way into the Primer Seating Cup, 10 times in a row. Angle of Primer Slide Operating Rod (13869) - Release rod from rollers and swivel it 180º so it's pointing straight up - it should be parallel with the Primer Housing Shield, or maybe outward "a little"; it should not be "inward" at all. Be sure both screws (14530) that tighten Roller Bracket Shell Platform (14280) from bottom (to the Shellplate Platform) are tight! Make sure Priming Seating Punch Assembly is fully bottomed out before tightening screw (13996): Measured from bottom of Primer Slide (13920) to top of seated Primer Seating Cup (13284/5), dimension should be between 2.125 - 2.220 inches. Be sure Priming Operating Rod Bracket (13887) is adjusted so it's within a few thousands of an inch from the top of frame/Toplhead. Be sure the plastic tips of all your Primer Pickup Tubes and the plastic tip on the bottom of the Priming Magazine are seated fully against the tubes. Grease the short end of the op-rod where it inserts into the bracket clamped around the primer shield.
limited 10
Be sure the primer seating punch assy. is centered in the shellplate hole, before tightening the two lower primer slide assy. screws ??
TCBDoubleTap
I had a similar problem when I started loading 45 ACP. Turns out that the Speer brass I was using used small primers. I switched to different brass and had no other issues.

Tossed out the Federals and have had no more problem. I just assumed all 45 brass used large primers. Guess I'll have to start looking at them before using them. chevyoneton
Yep, used to be all we had to do was sort the .40 (and the rare 10mm) out from the .45 but now we have to check for the small primer .45 and .45 GAP as well. I am seeing more and more of it (SP .45 ACP) in my range swept brass. I seperate it out and load it first when I swap the 550B from .40 (small primer) to .45 (before I change the primer feed from small to large), and last if I switch from large primer .45 to anything small primer so it is no big deal. Kind of handy to be able to stock and use more SP primers. If I had it to do over, and had to buy brass, I would buy SP .45.
