KungFuNerd
What do you use for Shotgun practice targets? I have a place I can go every now and then and would like to come up with some reusable targets.
rundownfid
I like to keep old water bottles and fill them, they make a fun target to shoot, although they do create a lot of mud. For slugs I use old IPSIC or IDPA targets, they just trash a target in 10-12 shots anyway so why destroy a new one? I also have a heavy duty "wiffle" football; I have shot this dozens of times and it is a ball to chase around the range. I also use the shotgun to "bead blast" my steel rifle targets periodically. Finally, one of my clubs has a cowboy steel set up and I use their targets a good bit.
boulderchild
I either use clays, old bowling pins or used ipsc targets for slugs. The range I practice at doesnt allow metal targets of any kind so I am somewhat limited in reusable options.
Chills1994
I am guessing you missed my classifieds thread here: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=143875&st=0&p=1618409&fromsearch=1entry1618409 I have a Mark II version in mind, again something that would be self-resetting. TRUBL
ok.....easy set up targets and CHEAP!!!!! First of.....go to Menards (or walmart in the spring) to buy shepard hooks. They'll set you back $5 to $9 each. Next....find a place that has steel, ask for A36 steel or even AR200....both will be good enough for bird shot or 22lr. Typically, they will be able to shear it into 6" squares and you should be able to get them for about $5 each.....but some guys might charge you as much as $10. So for about $10 to $19 per target....you can have a really nice, cheap and easy set up for birdshot. No need to re-set and you will KNOW when you hit them.....they are VERY reactive. TRUBL
The shepard hook rocks man!! We even used them at the shotgun championships up in St Cloud last year on a stage. Clay pigeons work fine....but you always have to replace them. Only good for one shot, unless you miss. I am fortunate enough to have guy near me that has a water jet cutter and last year he did a job where he cut out 7" holes in some 1/4" 303 series 'half hard' stainless steel sheets. I bought like 50 of the cut outs for scrap metal price. VERY tough to drill a hole through, but work great for both 22rf and birdshot. This spring I need to buy like 20 more shepard hooks.....then I can set up a 10 stage match at any range. The cool thing is, it all fits in the back of my Cherokee leaving room gun gear!! ArmdCtzn
You can use mild steel for shotgun practice with birdshot. Plates of 3/8" mild steel will outlast you if all you shoot them with is typical birdshot. No need to spend the extra for AR steel. Hang some clay-bird-sized pieces and have at it. KungFuNerd
I'm going to check with a local Steel supplier to see what I can get. Does anyone have pics of some Shepherd Crooks Targets they can post? I like the idea of being able to set different heights of crooks up and easily make a nice target array. The Targets for sale posted earlier in this thread look fun too
TRUBL
I do know that 1/4" A36 in the 6" size will take a 40s&w and 45acp round.....9mm will dent it up pretty good. Jesse Tishauser has a video of himself at the St Cloud shotgun match last year and one of the stages uses the shepard hooks (actually, my targets too) and they were 1/4" AR200 I think. The video is on post number 10....2nd to the last stage he shot.....you'll see the targets dancing. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=144595 Edited February 7, 2012 by TRUBL
cas
Bowling pins? Everyone said don't shoot bowling pins with birdshot, but no... I had to test it for myself. One shot and I was bleeding from the neck , face and forehead.
Chills1994
the one thing bad about actual clay birds, other than having to replace them after every practice run, is that the black stickey stuff will get on your hands, then get on your guns.
