New edition SV mags modification for STI frame

Hi,

Anyone have any modification process/technique they want to share with a new edition 9x19 SV mag to be used for STI frames.

I tried to modify a 170mm 9x19 new edition SV tube by making one of the holes bigger, i was able to get the mag to snap to the catch but it doesn't free fall/mag doesn't drop freely when you try and release it, it is really tight. I may have missed something or i didn't do it correctly :) Thanks for any help, solution and input.

I attached the photos for review.

Thanks

Take the mag catch out of the gun. Insert the mag (gently) all the way until it stops at the top. Let the magazine go. Does it drop free? If not, the tube is too large front to back or side to side (or both, though likely just the former).

I tried just this, it doesn't drop freely. You're right, the size could be larger. Thanks

I use a marker to color the mag up. Thay way I can tell where its dragging. If the mag that sticks is a tuned mag then I open the grip up a little using fine sandpaper. I stick the sand paper to the mag tube and work it in and out until the mag will drop free (when the sand paper is removed from it}

I have found that the "stick" is usually the magazines shoulders (where it tapers down to the feed lips) actually contacting the metal portion of the frame at the top of the magwell. This area is just above the grip screw bushings. It is a sharp 90-degree corner all the way around and will catch about 2/3 down the shoulder. I just relieve the edge on that and also chamfer the inside of the bushings.

I am actually surprised that you got it to lock in without chamfering that area. Most of the guns that I've done required it to be done before the feed lips would go up nearly high enough.

FWIW, Bruce, I've found that a lot of mags are too long front to back, and need to be squeezed in a vise a bit to get that dimension down. That's why I suggested gently seating the mag - it's not likely to get locked up on the shoulder if you don't slam it in.

I've heard of the shoulder thing, but not seen it in any of my guns... but it's another good thing to check...

I suggested removing the mag catch because sometimes the mag catch is too thick front to back - the mags drop free without it installed, but put it in, and the mags don't drop. Relieve the inside surface of the mag catch a little, and they start dropping out... ;)

+1, I had to chamfer that edge as well. Fortunately I haven't needed to touch the bushings.

I thought that only svi mags work in the new svi metal grips. Is there any modifications that need to be done to make them work? I have heard you must modify the new svi mags to fit sti grips
