Blcksmk
I was looking at some video's on Glockworx's website and it showed a guy shooting a hybrid ported G17 in 3-Gun. I know most people use comps in Open but, what about completely shooting a hybrid ported gun? Basically 5-6 holes in the top of the slide and barrel shooting a major 9 load. How do you think it would shoot VS a comp gun? I'm sure it would be much louder than a regular comp gun but I'm more concerned on how flat it would shoot. I posted this in Glock Forum as well but felt maybe I should move it here being more open gun related. Mods, could you move this same post from the Glock forum? Blcksmk Check out this pic from Glockworx.com It is a ported barrel with no comp, and they list it's chief advantage as being able to remove the barrel for cleaning without removing a comp:
DocMedic
While I didn't use a glock, I did use a ported barrel M&P setup much like the glock works when I was dabbling for an Open pistol for SC and 3 gun. I had a 2 ported LC barrel, ended up selling it here and picking up a threaded KKM barrel with a Carver Comp, ...then a week later I put and order in for a "real" open gun. lol. From my experience the Ported barrel didn't keep the gun down as good as the carver comp did, but I could run Minor PF ammo through the ported barrel, where the Comp I have to run a bit of a Spicer load (above 140PF) in order to cycle it 100% reliably, which added in reducing Muzzle flip due to the extra gas for the comp. But running my 170PF ammo through the M&P it felt Violent to say the least
Whoops!
Without going into too much detail, a fully ported barrel in open is worthless without a good compensator to go with it. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.
Arbutrator
If you cut the ports and the slide ?...you get flash. So you may be creating a problem while trying to eliminate another...Having said that it may be an individual thing, but not main stream. The default race gun of today is pretty tough beat. By that I mean stay with just the comp, no ports on the barrel. Edited January 21, 2012 by Arbutrator
Whoops!
I would disagree in that regard. If it's not cost or powder prohibitive to put ports in your Glock's barrel do it. Just make sure you have a good comp as well. The Glock platform needs as much help as it can get to tame major loads.
