Demetrio
Here in Brazil, like in Italy and few other countries, the 9x19 caliber is not permited for civilian use, so the options we have for competition are the 9x21, 38 Super Auto, .40 and .45 ACP for pistol, basically. I am right now in the process of choosing a gun for IPSC Production division and considering getting one in 9x21. I like the 9x19 a lot (I happen to use it for work) and think the 9x21 will give me more of the good characteristics of the 9mm I'm used to than the 38 SA can do. I know that many in my country will prefer the 38 SA because it's hard to find 9x21 brasses over here, but I have already got some considerable amount of brasses in the caliber for reloading, so that's no problem for me anymore. What do you think about this? Would you also choose the 9x21 over the 38 SA in my situation? Demetrio. Edited January 13, 2012 by Demetrio
Walküre
I would think that you would have a lot more options in 9x21, since it's really just 9x19 with a longer case (same nominal OAL). Super on the other hand is a lot longer, and many platforms aren't made to accommodate it. (e.g., there are no .38S CZs - the only one with a frame long enough would be the 97B.) If we were talking Open, then I would say .38S - but I prefer .38S for an Open gun even in a country were I could choose to run 9x19 Major. Canuck223
I hate to sound like an ass, but I'd work from the other end of the equation. Pick the gun you prefer, and the cartridge that suits it (and your needs) best. If your prefered gun will work with .38 Super, I'd go with it over 9 x 21.
