fastarget
Have a couple of JP/Cooley comps, would like to tune for a bit more downforce(not even sure if they are tuneable like some others like BH's) , anyone tune a JP comp before, or may be able to provide a link regarding the subject? cworks
If you look on JP's website, there is a picture of Bennie Cooley holding a rifle with his comp on it and it has a hole drilled into the side of it. That leads me to think that it's possible. I personally asked a JP representative if there were any special instructions on how to do this. I was told that there wasn't any specific literature on it but it would be similar to tuning a BH comp. I bought a SJC Titan and it works great. Others will agree. Hope this helps. If you do tune it up keep us updated. I'm curious to see what the results will be.
fastarget
Thanks for the info, yes there is a little info by JP regarding drilling a hole in the side to counter clocking in a rifle. Since both guns have the same comp I am tempted to play with one. Would there be any detriment to opening the first set of top holes for example to increase downforce? I might try it, in small increments and see. Each rifle behaves so differently. The last real good test I think dates back to 2007, it would be nice to see another test, more up to date with the new comp designs.
cworks
I was going to put the side hole and increase the top ports like you described. After shooting a buddies SJC I love it so much I bought one. I have the Cooley still and wouldn't mind playing with opening the ports. It's just to cold to spend to much time outside. Been in the negatives that last week or so
shooter545
I run the Surefire MB556K brake. It's designed for a right handed shooter. I'm right handed but left eye dominant so I shoot my rifle left handed(I know wrong sided). I drill out the left port so that it is equal size to the right port and it makes it a nuetral brake. The rifle then just recoils straight back. I have toyed around with one where I opened the left port up a little more but it didn't seem any better that when they were both the same size. It works for me and make the rifle shoot very soft. Hope that helps.
Bear1142
It's gonna be tough to increase the downforce of the comp unless there is a void between the end of the muzzle and the first baffle wall that you can tap into. Drilling side ports will help control some of the left/right torque, but at some expense of the downforce. For most, this is an acceptable trade and it help "tune" the comp to the shooter. Drilling another port on top in an attempt to increase the downforce likely won't work well. Think of it like this...drilling more holes in a bucket of water isn't going to force more water through the old holes, it's only going to reduce the pressure and drain faster. I would try to enlarge the current holes in the JP comp one drill bit size larger and see what that does before I started drilling new holes. Erik Hello Erik, My thoughts exactly. The comp as you know has 2 sets of 2 holes on top, would it be prudent to assume that enlarging the set closest to the muzzle one step up would be the most effective? benny hill
HELL, If I was as big as a "bear", I would not need a comp at all.

J.Schmitt
You definitly can open up the top holes. Send Brian Payne a pm on this. He side tapped one on the right side and then opened up the top right rear. Jay
