Gem City - W.PA - Information Please

Recommended Posts

For all you W. Pa folks,

I am hoping to drive up to the range and observe a match or two I have been an IDPA member for two years and have yet to attend a single match I finally think I may be in one place long enough to finally get to do more than practice. Is this range setup to accept "watchers"? Any info would be appreciated. I know that January has 2nd and 4th Sunday matches.

Thanks,

Gene

The matches you are talking about are USPSA. Bring your gun, they are more fun to shoot than to watch.

My stock XDM 3.8 Carry gun?? I will have it but i wont be shooting the first day. Iam a safe "practicer" but want to see what it looks like before i commit to utter embarassment, lol plus hopefully by the second match i will be able to tell who is laughing at me by name instead of just shirt color :roflol:

Hi Gene,

Be aware that USPSA and IDPA (and most organized/affiliated matches) run a cold range. It's a dynamic environment, with lots of gun handling going on. The idea is to control that for safety reasons. So, don't commit a foul by exposing your carry gun to the match.

Where are you located in WV? There should be a lot of USPSA and IDPA matches closer than Gem City. There's a ton of USPSA near Pittsburgh and there's IDPA at Weirton, Youngstown and several other places.

Im in the northern panhandle, near wheeling. I asked around and I travel into and out of Columbus and Western Pa. I was in Texas DFW area for the last five years yet spent nearly 200-250 days a year on the road as a public safety systems engineer. I have witnessed an IDPA match thought it was cool and joined in 09 yet didnt get a chance to shoot in a single match. I was hoping to watch a few uspsa matches and Gem city came up as the soonest (ie before I have to find a real job again) But to answer your question I hope to shoot both styles in and around the area this summer. My kids wanted me to quit traveling for work so we moved back home for good. Maybe? Thanks for the info.

Kyle,

Thanks for the heads up. I generally have the weapon locked in a easy access vault built into my truck. If you read my What I hate post. I recently lost my old XD carry and equipment due to some low life so I added a console vault to my truck. I also read where some matches frown on daily carriers showing up loaded so I did have that in mind....Which again expounds upon why this is a great place to be for anyone wanting competition shooting information.. You guys are great thanks.

Gene

Don't worry, we never laugh at the new guys. Anybody that has been there a while is fair game though. And don't worry about not knowing anyone's name. At our ages we never learn names. You will be referred to by " you know, that guy that shoots the XDM carry gun." We have people that we have shot 3 years with and still don't know their name. They are " you know, that young kid with the Glock 35 and Robin Taylor base pads". Come on and have fun.

Wow! I gotta read this board more often!

Hi Gene! I am Matt the match director. Come on up. I'll take care of ya!

Check our schedule on our webpage for match dates. I will give you an orientation and safety briefing when you come up. You'll have plenty of time to watch and bring your gear with you! If you're coming this far, might as well shoot!
