95 gr MG JHP N310, N350, or Solo 1000?

post-24944-0-27674000-1324440287_thumb.jHi,

Newby here. I have a Dan Wesson PM-9 with a mildly lightened slide that I would like to use for steel plate only. I have a bag of 1000 95 gr Montana Gold JHP that I would like to try since I like the feeling of a fast slide. What do you guys think about the following powders?

4.3 gr Solo 1000

4.5-5.0 N350

? N310

Since I'm only shooting steel plate and not needing any minimum power factor, I'm just trying to get the gun to cycle with minimal recoil, for fun.

Your thoughts?

When I played with light bullets in an open gun, I experimented with pushing them at 1400+ FPS using HS-6.

Without a comp though, that probably wouldn't be too comfortable.

that must have been like "Having frikin lazer beams attached to their heads!"

I shot a bunch of 95 gr Zero bullets for steel they work great in a revolver too.

But in my limited gun they do not work as good as the 147 going slower for feel and recovery time on paper targets.

5.9 of Hog Universal gave me good results in the limited 6" supper

6.0gr of 7625 gave good knock down on falling steel

my favorite steel challenge load for an open comped gun was 6.5 of Universal

The zero 95 gr bullet is .356 and has a total copper coat so you get very little smoke.

MG 95 jhp @ 1.075 with 5.4 of N340 has a PF of 114 at 1202 fps, and shoots a 1.31" group at 20 yds in my EAA, 1156 fps, PF 109 in my PM-9, Solo 1000 @ 4.3gr was 96 PF and 1012 fps shot 2" group. Also I just got some Bayou 105's to try. I'll let ou know how they work out, I'll test them in the PM-9.

I went to the range yesterday but only stayed for 10 minutes because the family that arrived and set up next to me were not very safe, and it was obvious they had no business holding guns, so I left before anyone got accidentally shot...

I tried only a few loads:

It was quite blustery/windy so that also made it difficult to hold steady, but:

The best was a 1/2" 5 shot group center to center with 125 gr Hornady Action Pistol HP over 4.3 of titegroup at 15 yards, no sandbags or rest.

The only 95 gr test I did was with a charge of 4.5 and 4.7 gr of 231. I was getting 5 shot groups of 1"-1 1/4" at 15 yards, but the wind had some affect on that.

Does anyone know the max load for 231 and 95 gr projectiles? I'm getting the feeling that a little faster might be a little more accurate.

I'm going to try to buy some Solo-1000 and give that a try too.

Like a lot of things it depends on who you ask. ;) As an example, Hodgdon's web site lists a max of 5.3 grains, which according to them is good for 1,273fps. Sierra's manual claims a max of 6.0 grains will produce 1,350fps. Interestingly, Sierra's manual says that 5.3 grains is good for 1,250fps, which puts the two sources basically in agreement in terms of charge vs. velocity at the 5.3 grain mark. OAL from both sources is listed at 1.020" for 95 grain bullets.

I'm not sure about other sources, those are the only two I can access at the moment.

Thank you very much for your efforts. I found in the Lyman a max of 5.1 at 1374 fps. Since the 4.5 and 4.7 loads had such low recoil (almost like a .22) I'm going to try 4.8 and 4.9 just to see if it tightens the group a bit. I'm still very new at all this so I thought I would ask you much more experienced people for some advice before I tried anything higher.

FWIW My chrono read 1251 fps with 4.7 gr 231

Thank you again for all your help
