Recon'sHide
Greetings and salutations! I am traveling up to Mesa AZ for their single stack classic, using 230 gr round nose berrys with clays 4gr/coal is 1.25 out of a trojan 5 inch. Now, with 4 grains I am not making power factor. With the elevation and cool temps I am wondering if I should switch powders to solo 1000 especially since Clays 4 grains is at the top of the charts--dont want to chrono a minor! So any Mesa boys/girls loading clays/230 grainers @ elevation making PF? If so what bullet, weight and coal are you using to make sure PF is spot on? Thanks & Happy Holidays! bbbean
I would never suggest anyone use a load outside published limits but I can tell you that a great many shooters, including me, have to push the published Clays loads by a few tenths of a grain to make major. I ran 4.3 gr Clays with 230 gr MG and Hornady HAP, and run 4 gr Clays with Precision 230s to make pf=175. I have to similarly push the 200 grain loads to make major. Dan Sierpina
I used 4.3 of Clays with a 230 FMJ (Remington, old stock) and made 179 P.F. when I shot the match a couple years ago.

twodownzero
Mine make major at 3.6-3.7. I'm surprised you guys need that much powder.

I am using 230 grain FMJ, coal 1.25 out of a 5 inch barrel. To make PF I need 720fps. david
ChuckS
4.1 Clays at 1.250" with the elusive Zero 230 gr fmj in a 5" Kart barrel gave me about 171.4 YMMV, Chuck
njl
Switch to WST. It shoots much like clays, but has way more room at the top end and can be loaded to major PF without going beyond max.
sbo76
230g Zero FMJ 4.7 grains solo 1.260 made a 170pf on the match chrono. The Frontier CMJ's usually take about .2g less to make the same power factor.
pjb45
BTW: It is Championship not Classic. The other great match at Rio is the Desert Classic. I don't shoot Clays, but the temperature at Chrono can vary depending on the time of day.
