Outsydlooknin75
A high quality ring in 35mm should not need lapping. I don't think there are many cheap 35mm rings on the market. Couple a quality set of rings with a quality straight untorqued base and you shouldn't need to lap them. If your base is straight and square prior to mounting it on the action and not so much after mounting I would suggest bedding the base to the action itself that way it will stay true when you torque the screws down. drglock
Im not wanting to lap for alignment but rather to remove high spots inside the rings.
Graham Smith
Im not wanting to lap for alignment but rather to remove high spots inside the rings. What brand of rings?
drglock
they are vortex rings on a razor hd,dont have my base in yet so I mounted my scope on my ar so I could try the scope out. When I took the scope out of the rings the tube had slight ring marks on it all ready.I didnt put the rings on that tight I used an allen longs ways, got them finger tight then turned them a 1/8 of a turn.I was told that the rings are made by Seekins for Vortex. the ring marks are not into the tube just the finish but I dont want to take a chance of marking the tube when I mount them on my rifle. whistlepig
I know that opinions on this subject are varied. I lap rings. I even lap high quality rings. Sometimes they hardly need anything. One or two passes will show a uniform pattern and no high spots. That lets me know things are good. Lapping is a good diagnostic tool to check on the whole scope/rings/bases system. The highest quality rings can be not worth much if the bases are no good or if I have made a mistake somewhere else along the line. I have run across mis-aligned factory drilled and tapped holes for the bases in a factory "high quality" rifle. My point is that if I check everything and take away the mechanical variables, I have only myself to blame for failure....... Wait. Maybe I haven't thought this thru.....................................
427Cobra
All my rings get lapped, my 3k scopes deserve a nice place to rest in, anybody who says its a waste is really misinformed or just loves taking chances.
