kimel
A couple years ago my wife gave me a set of well made and exquisitely tuned wind chimes for my birthday. She knew that I have this thing for wind chimes because I was always over messing with them in any store that had them. There are lots and lots of wind chimes out there but precious few of them are actually tuned to a muscial scale. My musical ability is pretty much limited to turning on the radio but I know in tune and I know out of tune. This afternoon I was out working in the yard enjoying the wonderful music and realized once again just how relaxing it was to have this pleasant melody playing along in the background. My chimes are part of a set based upon the Pentatonic Scale. No clue what that means but they are way cool. You can see more about themhere. I have the Mezzo and desparately want the Alto and Tenor. They have sound clips there as well. There are other scales as well but I like the Pentatonic the best with the Hawaiian a close second. And for those that really want to annoy the neighbors...check out the Basso Profundo. And when you get it call me and I will bring dinner. Someday if I can ever move out into the sticks one of these beauties will grace my sound garden...oh yeah. Mine have been through several winter storms and they look as new as the day I hung them on my porch. IMHO...no patio or garden is complete without a good set of wind chimes. BDH
IMHO...no patio or garden is complete without a good set of wind chimes. I am completely and totally with you on this one! Now, if it wasn't cold and raining outside, I would be able to enjoy ours!
EricW
My grandfather used to make some pretty cool ones out of simple electrical conduit. Not tuned, but very cool nonetheless.
diehli
The cheap ones annoy the HELL out of me (being musically inclined and all). Don't think I'd mind these ones all that much.
kimel
What's really funny is that you can be working or relaxing and listening to the wind chimes and this part of your brain is playing "Name that tune". You get a few notes in the right sequence and you think you have it but then it goes off in some random direction. My dad has made chimes out of copper water pipe for a few years and gotten fairly close to in tune but there is always a sour note in there. I have a set of his chimes and they stay up because of who made them. But I have been known to silence them so they don't clash with the good ones.
