650 powder spills

Recommended Posts

I just got my 650 this week. I have it set up and loading data without incident, but I have one small problem.

When the shell plate advances, it snaps into the new position, and this jars the cases so much that powder jumps up and out of the cases.

My cases are not all the way full - I'm loading 4.5 gr of win 231 in 9mm - making the case just over half full.

It seems there should be a way to have the shell plate progress without spillage - especially for some people who run compressed loads. There must be a way not to spill powder.

Can anyone help? Am I doing something wrong?

I grab a bullet as the plate starts indexing and then kind of cushion and place the bullet on the case mouth as it slides into alignment, so I am kind of cushioning the "snap" with My left thumb. It is fast and works for me, even with fairly full cases and rifle cases too. KURTM

Soligen-Did you find the thread about cutting the spring under the shellplate that pressures the indexing ball? Clipping that spring helps a lot. I also squished it and held it a while. Double check the tightness of the shellplate retaining bolt. The advice from AP is great. I just tightened mine up more, and the powder is staying in the cases a lot better. If you havn't yet, read all of FAQ's for reloading. Ton's of great advice for better performance. Eric's powder measure retrograde is awesome.

Thanks everyone. I re-read the entire faq. I actually had read it before I ever ordered my 650, but forgot that post becasue I didn't understand it at the time. Unfortunately I didn't know the right words for a search, so didn't find it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, and I apologize for the spurious post. I do have a question about specifically which spring to clip, and I posted that question in the FAQ thread.

Thanks

Soligen
