Magnus DUX
Are there any AR handguards that would be a direct replacement to the factory ones but slimmer. No rails. Aluminum or plastic.
bpipe95
Rock River has GI style handgaurds that are really thin. Might be worth contacting them.

MrFarnham
How do I know if I have a carbine, mid, or rifle length hand guard? I have an Armalite m-15 with a 16in. barrel.
JeffWard
16" barrel with standard gas block IS a carbine. 18"= mid-length. 20" = rifle. I second the Magpul Carbine. Nice fit, compact, cheap, quality. Jeff
Howlin Mad
How do I know if I have a carbine, mid, or rifle length hand guard? I have an Armalite m-15 with a 16in. barrel. If it is an M4 profile barrel it uses a carbine handguard. Almost all of the recent Armalite carbines use a midlength handguard.

Nice fit, compact, cheap, quality. Jeff Barrel has length does not corrospond to the gas system. For example there are mid lenght 14.5 inch systems, their are 18 inch barrels with rifle length gas systems. Their are 16 inch barrels with mid and carbine length. The gas system lenths for handguards are as follows 1. Carbine 7 inches 2. Mid Length 9 inches. 3. Rifle lenght 12 inches. Pat

Be sure to measure your gas system before ordering.
twodownzero
I have a 14.5" middy, so I'd advise figuring out what you have.

five six
I have a 14.5" middy, so I'd advise figuring out what you have. To figure out the length, measure from the gas block to ??? To where the upper reciever starts. Its pretty easy to tell carbine from mid length, and rifle from either of those. Unless you're shooting a noveske it hasn't got the 4th non mentioned intermediate (between mid and rifle)
naturerancher
+1 for Magpul Moe Handguards. Inexpensive (~$30-35), very light, and simple, but you can add a rail for a light if you want.
