More importantly.

1. When you legally import a firearm you have a federal piece of paper that says you are allowed to be in possession of a firearm and possibly ammunition, not sure how it works for ammo, but here ammo and guns treated the same. Probably covers you for more than the one you brought in.

2. And as spreviously stated, it is also a Federal Offence for someone to supply you a firearm that may even include "LOAN". The BATF (FBI) get involved.

3. It would certainly be considered a straw purchase if you paid for a firearm and left it in the US in the care of someone else, so when you pick it up off them point 2 comes into play.

You can take possession of everything except the bit with the serial number on it, the frame. This changed I believe in 2003 or 2005 and they started enforcing it vigorously almost immediately. I can assure you a gun dealer from this part of the world spent just over 1 year as a guest of a Georgian Penitentiary for taking possession of firearms when he had no legal right to do so. I am sure his back passage has reduced in size by now??

In your shoes, I'd bite the bullet and just have my gun built in Italy. IPSC is popular there, so finding a gunsmith in Europe to craft your choice of gun into something suitable for Action Pistol shouldn't be hard. If you need a local source, register on the IPSC Global Village and I'm sure our European brothers can help out.

As for bringing the gun with you, it takes a bit of paperwork and some lead time, but it's not terribly hard.

You need to get a proper match invitation from the host orginization for each match.

You then submit a Form 6NIA to the US State Department for each match.

As added insurance, purchase a hunting permit from one of the states.

With an approved Form 6NIA, you can bring in your gun and ammo into the US. You can also purchase ammo in the US with the same doc.

Truly, the biggest hurdle in importing the gun for competition is the magazines (depending on the state your plane arrives in), and the small amount of ammo you're allowed to fly with (5kg).

For Action Pistol, I might consider going with a gun using just 10 round magazines. I might also consider buying a Dillon SDB and working up a load that you can reproduce with components you'll be able to acquire locally. (Perhaps bringing your bullets with you but sourcing the powder and primers and brass locally)

I have shot Zero Factory ammunition for matches since 1985. Reloading for you practice ammo and buying you match ammo would by my preference. You can buy the same ammo as i use from zero direct and I could bring it with me to Columbia for you, or mail it to your host Hotel. I placed 11th this year so you know the stuff is accurate. Just give us as much lee time as you can for your order.

We fly up every year and always bring hi cap mags. Not an issue for importation and we come through California every year.

For ammo, buy from someone like Zero, make sure they know you have either a 5" or 6" barrel, or make your own. 5kg of ammo is just under 400rounds. If you travel with another non shooting person they also can carry 5kg, 750 to 800 rounds will cover the match easily.

I no longer bring ammo, 5kg is a lot of Tea and Peanut Slabs. I make all mine in the US. If I had the money I would buy.

I suspect the big issue is getting the guns in and out of Europe. But it is something you will have to live with.

The only issue I'm aware of is the UK. Not that it's illegal to transit through the UK, but the transfer between airlines at Heathrow can be problematic. With so many of the major airlines partnered and codesharing, it's common to hear about confusion when the airport police that are required to escort the firearms during movement between airplanes, are not notified.

Maybe you could buy the base gun or frame in Italy/Europe, then bring it with you to the States and have a gunsmith here build it while you're in the country? Would require a fairly long stay, and a flexible smith.

I agree with the other advice, that it may not be feasible, or legal to leave a gun here to compete with. Maybe under a dual citizenship type scenario? but that would probably be more hassle than transporting it a couple times a year.

Factory Tanfoglio is not competitive in this game in Open. Not enough off the shelf parts to build an Open gun, everything would have to be custom built.

Even Metallic sight you would be at a disadvantage. Significant mods required to get them sorted.

1911 or STI / SVI the way to go for my money. More people more familiar with them, easier if the brown stuff hits the fan to get parts and help.

I think Luca would be well aware of them and the pitfals associated. He did shoot a 1920 in 2009. But not so good in 2010 I understand.
