mcoliver
I recently installed wide thumb safties and really liked the way they feel. However, I grip the gun pretty high up and my weak thumb base is already riding it at the side. During recoil, once it a while it gets activated. There's already a small notch drilled to it that catches the plunger pin making it even more positive when flicking it on or off. Is there any other mod I can do to make it even harder for the safety to move on and off? Appreciate your replies. Thanks.
tightloop
When I got my new Ltd gun, the left hand thumb safety was; seemed like half inch wide, but probably .375" or so. I didnt accidently engage it, I just couldn't get my thumb back over it after a mag change. I ground it down like the original Swenson on my L10 gun... Garfield
Although I shoot a Glock nowadays, I used to (and occasionally still do) shoot pistols with manual safeties. I taught myself to keep my strong hand thumb on top of the safety and that solved all (potential) problems for me. Is that no option for you ? mcoliver
Thanks for the replies guys. TL, the width is about a tad wider than the narrow wilson safety, so it's not really wide. It's just that it's real easy for it to move even with a detent. I'm looking at brownells if there's a heavy plunger spring available, if not maybe I can just pull the spring and make it longer? Garfield, actually, my grip is way up the strong thumb is already riding on my weak thumb base and the weak thumb base (fleshy portion of the palm area) is riding the safety...hope I explained that well. rhino
MC ... you might consider trying a grip with your strong hand thumb riding on the thumb safety all the time. It will prevent the safety from moving upward and it might help you shoot even better!

.40AET
Is there any other mod I can do to make it even harder for the safety to move on and off? Yes, you can drill the detent in the safety a little deeper. GO SLOW AND BE CAREFULL. It is very easy to drill too deep and make it next to impossible to activate the safety. Fixing the detent after you drill it too deep is a bitch to fix. Use a small drill bit and HAND turn it and test often. If you have a 1911 style then you can insert the drill bit in the front of the plunger hole. (Remove the slide stop & plunger/spring). Good Luck

Newguy
I was also activating the strong side safety when shooting, especially in reloads. Using a grinder and dremel I narrowed/cut back the strong side of the safety to where my finger is alongside of it rather than under it. No more problems. It's probably easier and more foolproof than trying to deepen the detent and possibly ruining the safety.
.40AET
Newguy brought up a good idea. I forgot that I took a dremel to the strong side safety. At the very back of the safety, I cut the corner down until it no longer came in contact with my index finger nuckel. The majority of the strong side safety was left in tact, just start witht the back outside corner.
