Primer question

I just looked at my primer supply. I saw that I have a 1000 small pistol magnum primers. I can't remember if I use them in place of regular primers, if I need to drop the powder charge a little for my 9mm loads. I have no other use for them, and hate to waist primers.

I think someone gave them to me, and I did not notice they were magnum.

You should be OK I ran Magnums and whatever else I could get my hands on during the great primer famine of 09 without dropping my load, any change should be negligible. If your running some crazy high power factor or you are already showing pressure signs you may want to drop .2 gr. load up some practice ammo and chrono.

I also noticed minimal effect on velocity, but big effect on the number of misfires - at least with my guns the magnums were pain in the ass, 20 or more per a hundred required second strike.

If you gun fires them then you have no issues. Some will not.

my open gun will fire win small pistol mag primers all day, but regular CCI small pistol primers are not reliable. i didnt change my charge since it was 172pf and the couple feet increase from magnum primers wasnt going to do anything harmful. however when i used them with my steel loads 115gr berrys rn over 5.0gr WST, i would get a lot of powder residue which went away with the magnum primers.

i used to load all WSR (for everything) before the primer famine.

i *think* the main difference is in the cup strength. the magnum primers are tougher/thicker to prevent erosion of the breech face with hotter 'magnum' loads that might flow around the SP primers.

i just can't imagine a different primer would make any real difference in pressure or chrono results.

I too started using magnums during the great primer shortage, I used whatever I could find. First I found Wolf primers and they seemed harder as I got light strikes. I had to go to a full strength main in my SA only CZ. This solved the light strike problem and when I started using magnum primers I had no problems with them either. So, if they are harder I haven't noticed, no other differences that I have found.
