prreed10
After shooting IDPA for the last 5 years (IDPA SSP/ESP MA), I decided to give USPSA a try. A local club is hosting a Sectional so I decided to give it a shot. I got to shoot on SO day since my oldest son has T-Ball games on the regular match days. Not my first USPSA match - I've got about a half dozen under my belt, but it sure felt like it was! First stage, I put up way too many Charlie's and a Mike. Second - again, too many Charlie's and Delta's. Third was the classifier - Mike - No Shoot. Foruth stage - hit a popper 2 times in the calibration zone - didn't go down. Called for calibration. Calibration gun/ammo took it down, but barely - Mike (actually 2 because I called calibration before I took down another piece if steel.) Chrono - made 125 PF exactly... Stages 5-9 went ok. Took a break for lunch (Should have just shot through!) Stage 10 was ok Stage 11 - threw a beautiful 2 shot group into hard cover - 2 Mikes Stage 12 - threw another into hard cover - Mike What I learned: I don't think I will try and shoot 12 stages in one day again. I finished in under 6 hours and felt rushed (not by any of the RO's or staff but by myself). Next one, I plan on taking my time, examining the stages and having a better plan. On a good note, I got to shoot with 3 good buddies and did have fun!

For a first large match ( and shooting 12 stages one hot day at Area 6, was a LARGE match), you didn't do too badly. 5 mikes and 1 no shoot isn't too bad for a first try. The 125.0 PF was a big mistake, but happens frequently if you are not around 132 PF to start with. Would have solved your problem with knocking down the steel also. But, you're right, NEXT TIME will be much better now that you've had the experience. Better luck next time. Area 8? Jack
prreed10
It was at the Area 4 Sectional in Little Rock, AR. I also learned another thing regarding ammo. My 9mm (147gr's) are loaded for IDPA - the chrono procedure is different. My ammo avg's 890 FPS with IDPA's barrel vertical method - made power at the IDPA Nationals last year with plenty to spare. Its back down to 850FPS without that. Didn't realize it made that much difference.

Guess it's "off topic", but I don't understand the difference (Barrel vertical method?) - Jack
prreed10
In IDPA, the barrel is held vertical before each shot through the chrono. This puts the powder up against the primer, give the shooter the best chance at making power.

I'm surprised at that difference also, especially since there's not that much room in a 9mm case when you seat a 147 gr bullet. I'll have to give that a try - see if I can repeat that kind of variance. What powder / primer were you using? Jack
prreed10
Titegroup. Can't remember way the OAL is, but I load a little long.
CDPMatt
yeah, it makes a difference when using powders that don't take up a lot of case space like TG. Ryan, this is a whole other game and it takes quite a while to learn the differences and wrap your head around which sport you're shooting this weekend. As someone who came from IDPA as well (SSP/ESP MA and only "B" Open/Lim) I almost walked away from USPSA as I expected to do well the 1st time out. 3 years later I'm still shooting and learning both. Just keep an open (and cool) mind about it all. Kinda like me in 3Gun, I have no idea what I'm doing and laugh (and learn) from my mistakes but I always have a good time They shot all 12 stages today trying to rush and beat the weather so it really wouldn't have helped you to shoot today instead. Let's go to Old Fort in May and shoot a different club match, I'll drive.... Later,
