650 crimping station

Recommended Posts

I am fairly new to the 650 and haven't loaded that many roudns on it, but noticed a strange problem this evening. When the case is leaving the crimping station, there is a little resistance, followed by a pretty large clicking sound and there is a small ring at the top of the brass where it appears to be "shaved" down a bit. I initially thought that I might have too much flare in the case, but I removed all of the flare and the sound (and ring) persist. Could the die somehow be off-center a bit?

Any ideas of what to start checking next?

Thanks for the help,

Zach

Sorry - I should have included all of this info.

All Dillon dies. 38 super, zero 125g JHP.

Perhaps it is normal??? I certainly don't remember hearing it in my 550 though.

Thanks again for the help,

Zach

Are you using new brass? This sounds like it. New brass frequently has a lip on the case mouth from tumbling after final cleaning. You can deburr the case mouth,or else just work through them the first time. Usually one or two firings are all that is necessary to smooth this up.

Well done Dillon :D:D:D

I am using a new batch of brass. If I do not deburr the cases, am I doing any long-term damage to the crimp die? I would rather not add another step to reloading if it isn't needed - and I can certainly live with the sound now that I know it isn't harmful.

Thanks for the help!

I keep a plastic bore brush that came with a Springfield 1911 near my loader. When I use new super brass I just need to push it through the crimp die from the top every 20-25 rounds or so to get the brass shavings out of the die and stop the sticking.

It is annoying but happens quite a lot with new brass.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just thought I would add an update -

I just got through loading my second batch of Remington brass and all the resistance and shaking and clicking is gone. I also tried a friend's Armscor and didn;t have a problem. It seems to be isolated to Starline brass only. I tried my brass through the press and two friend's starline brass and had the same problems with all. It looks like I am a new Remington fan...........

Thanks again for all the help,

Zach
