Brent D
Have been shooting 9 major now for about 6 months and have been consistently using MG 124 JHP. A few weeks back Montana Gold was out of this bullet and I didn't want to wait as I was just about out of the JHP. I ordered a case of the 124 CMJ. My thinking was that I didn't want the exposed lead at the back of the FMJ. Well, I just received my order and decided to measure the length to compare JHP to CMJ. The CMJ bullet is about .015" longer than the JHP. I can't imagine that this will be a major issue as I will just add .015 to my OAL. I'm currently loading the JHP at 1.160, so I will go to 1.175 on the CMJ. Has anyone shot both bullets and noticed any difference in performance. I have a chronograph, so will obviously work up my normal load with the added OAL and see how I come out. Load I'm shooting now is: MG 124gr JHP Mixed Brass 7.3gr Autocomp CCI Small Pistol Primers OAL 1.160 This gets me consistently to about 1400 FPS and seems to by very accurate. I've had my gun for about 6 months now (JV Dynamics open in 9 major). Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thx
Brent D
In thinking about my post a little, I think I wont change the OAL, but adjust the load the reach 170 PF. Looks like I will be doing a little Chrono work this week.
Hi-Power Jack
I'm using the WAC at 1.165", & JHP's, and a friend is at 1.145" - and I did some at 1.170" - never tried the CMJ, but you have a wide range open because there's so much room in the case with the 7.3 gr WAC. I'd keep my reloader the same, and try that with the CMJ (I'm lazy and don't like to readjust the settings if I don't have to) and see what the OAL is with the CMJ. If it's in the 1.14 - 1.17 range, I'd chrono it and see what it does. I wouldn't change the powder setting either - just see what happens, cautiously. Unless someone gets back to you with specific info. I may be wrong, but I would guess you'll be fine with no changes in powder or seating depth?? Good luck. blaster113
I've shot both the 124 gr CMJ and JHP in .38SC with Autocomp. I adjusted the OAL when I switched to the JHP, but feeding and accuracy was about the same. Chose to back off the powder charge a little as the different bullet sat a little deeper in the case, increased pressure and drove the PF to about 175. Previous loads were about 170. Pro2AInPA
I load both to 1.170". I get a little bit higher PF with the CMJs, I suppose because they're longer which gives less case volume. More importantly, my point of impact is about 3" different with the two bullets. Check your zero before shooting a match!
