I tested some ammo over the chrono last weekend. Both strings were 10 shots.

8.5g VV 3N38

124g Montana Gold CMJ

OAL 1.175"

Mixed brass

Tula small rifle primers

String 1:

High: 1375

Low: 1312

E.S.: 63

Ave: 1354.6

SD: 21.9

PF: 167

String 2:

High: 1370

Low: 1326

E.S.: 44

Ave: 1340

SD: 13.7

PF: 166

Will bump it up 0.2g and do some more chrono testing to see if I can get some cushion ... 171-172 PF would be ideal. Actually I'm going to try 8.7, 8.8, and 8.9 I think.

Just got a Match Master & started working on different loads. I see alot of good info here I just have to narrow it down. I've started out using 7.4 of Auto Comp, Rainier 124gr round nose, Seated at 1.165. It got me around 172PF but the rainier bullets at that velocity could not hold a group at all.

I'm now using Hornady HAP 125gr. JHP & I'm going to tryout some VV 3N38. I just need somwhere to start as far as how much powder to use with a 4.15 barrel. The PF I'm looking for is around 168 to 170.

Thanks

The shorty tends to flip more than a full size so it becomes more about being able to track dot movement, and getting the palm slap down to a tolerable level. 124/125gr My shorty likes 7.7gr of Silhouette, not a lot different than AutoComp just a lot smoother dot movement. The shorty also responded well to 10gr of AA#7 but the OAL needs to go to 1.180 as its a lot of powder like 3N38. And the 115gr w HS6 at 9.0gr is a nice load. OAL @ 1.165 unless other wise stated, and SPP. I currently use Magnum Pistol primers as the gun runs cleaner and I've dropped about .2 gr off the loads. You might have to bump a .1 here and there since my shorty hits 170pf with only 7.0gr of AutoComp. Barrel is 4.13 w Brazos ThunderComp II, no holes, 7 oz slide w/11# recoil, 17# main spring. Beven Grams uses 3n38 and he told me that there was .050 space in the case above the powder and he just crams a bullet down on it and it works good. I've worked a lot on eliminating powder sling on my XL650 but it still slings some. Let me know how the 3n38 goes I might give it a run.

Thanks guys. For my 650 tightened up my shell plate & put a dab of Slide Glide on the index cam that stopped most of the spill issues. Lithium grease should work better but I used what was handy. It does not snap anymore because I have to use pressure to index it

  • 2 weeks later...

Because of powder sling with Vitha N350 on his 1050 a buddy and me worked up a load with Vectan SP2 for his Match Master shorty.

Barrel is 4.15".

We developed a load of 8.8 grn SP2 under a Frontier 124CMJ.

COL is 29.0mm/1.142"

Brass: CBC.

Primer: CCI 500.

PF is 167. (Temp: 10 C/Hum: 85%)

It is not a compressed load and there are no signs of overpressure on the primer.

Because of the density of SP2 there's no powder sling anymore.

n-350 is compressed but definitely fits in a 9x19.

I have shot some, 7.4gr under 124CMJ MT Gold, at 1.170"OAL.

As clean as a whistle.

Right now it's AutoComp for me.

I chrono'ed some from 6.7 up to 7.1 gr, under 124CMJ MT Gold, at 1.170" OAL.

Fiocchi rifle primers, range brass.

5" Schuemann barrel, no snotholes, Bedell Comp.

6.9gr comes in right at 170PF, with little up and down.

Looks like I'm set for now.

Fills the case up about 1/2 to 2/3 and is allegedly temperature insensitive.

Hello,

I am interested in trying 3n38, my only concern if there is still room for seating the bullet, how full is 8.8gr. of 3n38? thanks

There is some room, but it is a compressed load. I'll take a picture tonight.

So, what are your thoughts about those 3n38 loads?

I'm an open rookie and this is the only load that I have shot consistently since making the move a couple months ago. It is flat and soft in my gun. The dot tracks straight up and down and does not leave the lens. Looking to work up a N350 load to compare as well as a HS-6 load.

Ncboiler - What is the set up on your gun, shorty or full size, hybrid or poppel holes etc?

Looks like I'll have to bump it up to 7.4g to get to ~171 pf. Once I get there I'll compare it to my 3N38 loads.

Here is a picture...

NC - That looks zakley like my gun with the Bedel only mine has a #3 hole in the barrel. Nowithstanding the hole, the Bedel comp and mine is a TI, likes right at 174-175pf. That barrel comp combo in mine is 38S I was loading 10.2gr of AA#7 and hated the gun then I tried 10.5gr and it flattened out and softened up but the hole put the icing on the cake. Don't blow yourself up but try your 3n38 a little hotter see if it helps.

Thanks for the tip ... I can try up to about 9.1 - 9.2g I think. Primers still looked fine at 8.9g but I'll work back up slowly.

I have a nearly identical gun, only major difference is a traditional C-More mount. I ruled out N350 after one test session as it showed significant pressure signs before even reaching Major. Currently running 7.3gr of 7625. I've posted various bits of data in this thread.

Watch out with N350 and 3N37... So many slides have been cracked with those powders and high pressures they create :(

I would only use Vihtavuori 3N38 or N105 for 9mm Major.
