Bwana Six-Gun
Tonight I was watching the Military Channel and they showed the "Doolittle Raid". There are only four or five of those brave men left. I could not help but think, where are those kind of men in our society today. Few and damn far between. Those that are, are mocked or ridiculed. I hope we still keep producing those men despite what politicians try to do. They keep us safe!
Sarge
So true! Just imagine climbing into an airplane and knowing in your heart you were on a suicide mission. you are right. If somebody offered to do that today they would probably be considered a dumba$$. Pretty sad to say the least. I am a bit of a WWII buff and I think alot of it has to do with the way in which the country fought it.
Chills1994
these are the Doolittle raider cups or goblets. at each reunion the surviving raiders drink from their cups. the upside down cups belong to the now deceased raiders. I was watching the movie "The Right Stuff" the other night...and you're correct, I think, they don't make men like that any more.

Joe4d
What Doolittle raiders accomplished was beyond description, but I take exception to the notion they dont make men like that, Gary Gordon, Randy Shughart, Salvator Giunta, Robert Miller, Jared Monti, Michael Murphy, Jason Dunham, Ross Mcginnis, Michael Monsor, Paul Smith, and those are just the ones that recieved the CMH, I could go on. How many firefighters went into the world trade center to get people out when everyone else was running away ?

Sad to see the number of cups dwindling. We have the privledge of having a man in our Harley chapter who was a tail gunner with the Flying Tigers. 84+ years old and still rides a Harley. His wife is close to 90 and stopped riding a couple years ago. Such an honor to know him.
whitedog
There are still men like that, it's just not politically correct to have them in the news. People want to hear about Hollywood train wrecks. I know more than a few that died at the towers, good men all.

He might have been in the 16th air force which absorbed the AVG after the US entered the war after Pearl Harbor. They may have flown bombers with tail guns but were not Flying Tigers. Now I need to verify what I've heard the last 10 years... I'm sure he was with the Tigers, and they just did an article on him and said he was a tail gunner.... Inquiring minds want to know. If he is 84 YO now that means he was born in 1927. That would make him 14 YO in 1941.
