Red Ryder
I have heard that some powders can very from lot number to lot number in performance. Which powders vary the most? Let's say my load is 4.6 grains (IMR 7625) or 4.1 grains (Titegroup) or 4.2 grains (Vihtavuori N320), can I use the same grains with a new can? Or do I have to work the load up again? Bob DuBois
I like Solo 1000 and it has varied from lot to lot as well as being very heat sensitive. It's always best to take the chronograph out and check the new lot, may save you some grieve. The other powders I use are do not vary as much but still best to check. Dillon b
i find that it can vary some, its best to buy large quantities of powder so the lot variations will not be an issue, that's why i found a good load and bought a couple 8 pound jugs. G-ManBart
They all vary to some degree...some just vary more than others, and there really isn't any sort of list or rule to follow. For practice use, it's probably not necessary to work up a new load with a new lot, but for big match use, it's always a good idea. I try to always remember to note the lot when documenting chronograph work.
Sarge
Any powder will vary enough to make it worth while to chrono new loads from a different lot.
