zpartan
Hello Revo friends. I'm sure I can search this info but I wanted to ask your first hand recommendation before I purchase on line. Can I install this myself? Thanks.
JFlowers
Z, The standard I would think would be a SDM. If your revo has a pinned front sight then you should be able to change it yourself. One of the forum vendors also has a line of sights if you want to look into them.
Gregg K
Some of the 625-8's have a quick change front sight. If you look at the muzzle and there is a hole in the front of your front sight ramp it is the quick change type and all you to is push strait back on the sight against its spring detent until you can lift up on the front of the sight and clear the cross pin. Warren who posts as Toolguy makes a line of sights that are excellent. You can find him in the Vendors area under Protocall Design
Carmoney
Standard (non-PC and non-JM) 625s take the pinned front sight. Can you install it yourself? If you're fairly handy with tools and metalwork, sure! However, be warned, I've done at least a hundred, and I still manage to screw them up now and then. And I've got pretty good hands. After you get the stock sight off (which takes a very fine punch--you can make one by grinding the tip off one of those tiny eyeglass screwdrivers), the first thing you will find is that the tang of the sight is too large to fit into the slot on the gun. So you will need to carefully file material off both sides of the sight until it fits down in all the way. It's hard to file both sides evenly, but if you don't, the sight will be crooked. Then after the sight fits the slot, you have to mark the hole location, remove the sight, and drill it exactly straight--a drill press is best but a hand drill will suffice if you're steady. If you mess up here, the sight can easily be ruined. Some will tell you to use the existing cross pin hole on the barrel as a drilling guide--BZZZT, wrong! You will wind up hogging out the hole. I've seen several examples of people trying that method, and it ain't pretty. Now, I'm not saying you can't do it. Just be aware there is nothing about fitting a pinned front sight that is a "drop-in" proposition, and be sure you proceed cautiously. granderojo
All the JM's I've ever seen have the quick change sight (Classic and DX) that Gregg K wrote about.

That is just downright slick!
dagger10k
So, if I understand the quick change system correctly, you could get something like this: http://www.midwayusa...ctnumber=180763, and install it with no tools? Or would it still require fitting/drilling? ETA: I'm guessing no, because I don't see how this could be held in with no pin. Does anyone know where I could get a FS like this that would work with the quick change system? Edited April 4, 2011 by dagger10k

The JM version does have the interchangeable "Classic" system. Those are generally a drop-in proposition. The 625s I'm talking about in my post are the plain 625s. I edited in a clarification. Try http://jackweigand.com/interfs.html he sells a front sight interchangable system that can be installed if your revolver does not have one or you can just order the blade that you want and it will work on the Classic and DX front sights on S&W revolvers. He sells a ramped version that you are looking for.

professor
I found out my JM 625 had an easily removable front sight in a somewhat unique way. Shooting an all Steel match [PSA Shootout], I had just used a boresnake on the cylinder and barrel, then got to the line to shoot. Brought the gun up to take a sight picture, and found I no longer HAD a front sight. So I got put back in the shooting order to figure out just what happened. Searched around the safe gun area and found the wayward front sight lying about 10 feet away. Apparently, the bore snake wrapped around the front sight and pulled it loose while I was running it through the barrel. Anyway, once I found it, there was no problem getting it back into position, and there was no change whatsoever in point of aim. Moral of the story: Don't clean a revolver. It can be hazardous to your [mental] health!
