Open Division: No More Major Scoring

copied from the IPSC Global Village:

Hi guys,

I want to seek your input about a new proposal to remove Major scoring from Open Division. This means Open would be Minor scoring only, the same as Production Division. The top reasons are:

1. Open guns are so much easier to shoot, 95% of shots hit the A Zone anyway, which always scores 5 points, Major or Minor.

2. If we abolish Major scoring in Open, many people will convert to 9x19mm, which is easy to supply as Official Match Ammo from mainstream manufacturers (e.g. Winchester, PMC, Federal, S&B, Fiocchi). Still want to BYO? No problem. Knock yourself out.

3. Additionally, the airline 5kgs limit would cease to be a problem for travellers. Whatever ammo you use at home will be available at the match. No need for gun tuning at the range.

4. Guns would last longer and Poppers would not get damaged so easily.

5. Less noise for Range Officers.

Rather than having an anonymous poll, I'd rather hear pro and con arguments. I'm wearing my Kevlar, so let's go .....

Hmm, it would open Open Division to those people who now shoot Production. I have an extra G34, I could just slap a slide mount red dot or a c-more on it, load up my high caps and have a good time. Cost, minimal.

Im not an open shooter but I think its a pretty cool idea. Ive never really seen the point of major in open but thats not saying there isnt one. Seems like it would be pretty awesome to have one load for steel challenge and USPSA.

Not sure if this is an April 1st joke or not...

Would factory 9mm still make 125PF out of a multi-ported open gun?

How about just dropping the power factor??

I may get flamed for saying this but something like IDPA's ESP division. The gamers division.

Its ok with me. It will force lots of open shooters to be more accurate or get crushed in the points.

I can see some grumbling from folks who spent lots of money on very robust open guns who will have to de-tune for the lower PF and will want to modify what they have to keep up with the much lighter guns that will follow in the wake of shooting factory 9mm.

For me it would be great, I can sell my full size Major 9 gun and shoot my steel gun for both games.

I compare Open division to pinnacle Motorsports racing. F1, Le Mans Prototype P 1 class, MotoGp, etc, etc.

Open should be the top of all divisions in anything related to DVC.

If we're going to do this, why not make everything minor only (limited, revo, SS)? I mean, who needs the power part of DVC anyway?

Yeah, who needs that

And lets just give everybody the same score as the winner..so no one feels poorly

Gee...

Why stop at open division? Why not eliminate major for all divisions?

Why not just one scoring matrix for all divisions? It doesn't make sense to me to have separate scoring anyway. You're scored against whomever is shooting in your division; it's the rules and regulations of the divisions that matter, not the method of scoring. Really, why the difference?

Screw the whole thing!

Let's just point our fingers and say BANG!

Let's make this sport as cheap and easy for EVERYONE!

Oooo... we have the technology to run advanced laser tag, no more stinky, loud, DaNgErOus bullets to w o r r y about!

It would be GREEN and Eco friendly

Yea thats it everybody...pinkies in the air, aren't we sweet, happy smiley people.

Don't forget the date!
