Thinking of Trading my M1S90....Would Like Advice.

Hey all,

I have a Benelli M1S90 with a 24 inch VR barrel. I have had it about 10 years or so and it has maybe 50 rounds through it. It just sits in its case now as I don't hunt and there aren't any clay ranges around me. I also currently don't have a Home Defense shotgun. All this has got me thinking about trading my Benelli for something else like the FN SLP Mark 1. I have never handled one though. There are others that I like, but I really haven't had a chance to look at the various options.

One thing I have thought about is swapping my barrel for a 21 inch VR, but that has went no where. It seems that the people that have the 21 inchers don't want to turn loose of them. The next option I thought about was having my barrel cut back and re-threaded. When I looked into it previously I was told it couldn't be done because of the wall thickness of the barrel. Someone gave me the email of a good shotgun smith and I contacted him and he told me that it can be done but not with BENELLI choke tubes. I would have to switch to something else. His price was pretty good too. I just don't know how well it would come out.

So I am in a situation. I don't know whether to trade my Benelli for another shotgun and not look back or get the barrel cut back.

I'd like to hear what you all think. Do you think the FN would be a good trade for me? What others would you consider in a trade?

As for the barrel cut back, can it be done and come out looking good and working great? I don't want some Frankenstein looking shotgun on my hands.

What do you think?

Thanks for your time.

Size doesn't matter... It what you can do with it that counts... That is my story and I am sticking to it!! :surprise:

I do not think 3 inches should be the reason to sell/trade your shotgun. Like any other skill in shooting, if you practice with the gun, you will become comfortable with it...

I run a 26" M2 in competition, and I would not hesitate to grab it in a home defense situation... unless my pistol is already in hand....

Too funny. We usually want the 3 extra inches. Reminds me of a funny joke I like to tell.

Dontget rid of that gunfor 3 inches. Carlson chokes if you want. To get it cut. Had them cut a 26 inch barrel for me and they did a great job. Even came with extra chokes for m e to use and fast turn around time. Most people say they don't notice that big a difference between the 24 and 21 vr....ymmv....

Hey all,

Thanks for the replies and offers. I am definitely keeping the offers in my mind and we'll see what happens. What I am going to do depends entirely if I can find someone that will trade me their 21 inch VR barrel for my 24 inch. If I can't, I will decide what way I want to go then, whether I want to trade it off or have the barrel cut.

I got it out last night to take a look at it. First time its been out in over a year. I marked with tape where possible cut off lines would be so I could see how it would look at that length. The problem with cutting it back at 21 inches is that at that length the cut would fall right in the middle of the supports for the Vent Rib and I don't think the smith would cut it there. It would turn out looking bad I think if he did. So that puts me at either 22 or 20 inches to be close to a VR support so it can be made to look at least close to factory. It's not as simple as just sending it off and saying "chop it off." I gotta make sure in any project like that that I don't end up devaluing what I've got.

I wish someone would just make it easy and trade me. That would make my day.

Thanks again for the advice.

I'd also like to see some pics of your 21 inch Benellis, if you have any.

Keep it!!! ....but, if you must get rid of it.... I have a Winchester SX2(exact same model as the FN SLP) with the carrier already welded, the loading area professionally milled for easier loading, Nordic Comp follower, Nordic Spring, Nordic extended bolt handle and 3-5(can't remember, no time to check) Briley extended choke tubes I will trade you for your M1S90. I also have the FN tactical rail extension I would throw in as well. It is my backup gun and has about 300 rounds through it, awesome condition. But, like I said earlier, keep it, just have it worked on by Salient or Benny. Have it done right.

I know what you mean about the ideal length falling in between the rib stanchions. Ideally, I want to convert my 28" barrel to 24", but because of the stanchion spacing it will be a 23" barrel, or a 20" barrel, which will be fine. I guess if it just had to be 24", I could make some sort of filler block & JB weld it in place purely for cosmetic reasons and to keep the unsupported rib section from getting bent. I will say one thing, although that 28" barrel is a little bit unweildy working in and around autos, it points like a dream, making hits very easy ; much better than my 20" barreled gun. I'm on the fence as wether to even touch it. Maybe I'll just use the 20" gun on those stages where an auto is involved. This dilemma gives me something to ponder....

This is my M1S90 that started with a 26" barrel. I had forum member Guncat cut it to 21" and re-threaded for TruChokes. The walls were too thin for any other chokes.

It is flush with the Nordic +5 extension, and is cut on a barrel support. Guncat knew where to cut it to make it right, I think he has done this a time or two.

I agree that 2-3" isn't a deal breaker, shoot it and see if you like it as is. I just had the money, and wanted it like I wanted it.YMMV.

From what you're describing I don't see any reason to get rid of it. 24" is a great length for 3 gun. If you need a home defense shotgun I'd get an 18.5" Mossberg pump for cheap and keep the Benelli for your gaming gun.

If you want it cut I second sending it to Guncat. I sent my 930 to him and he does very nice work at a good price.

Keep it. Carl Carbon runs a stock Benelli M1Super90 like that and he does real well with it in 3Gun. I have one 24" M1 Super 90 and a 21" M1Super90 - with a +8 and + 9 tube. I love them both. It's a great 3 Gun shotgun with an extended mag tube on it.
