Waterfowl-widowmaker
I'm loading 3.2 gr of Titegroup and 180 gr jhp in mixed headstamp brass out of a 5" 1911. They are loaded to 1.135 and chrono at 725 fps. I noticed that when I dropped down from 3.5 grains the mouths of the case started smoking up about 3/8" inch from the top. Is this something I need to be worried about.
yoshidaex
I've seen instances of what you're seeing in loads that are low pressure. Wouldn't worry about it unless it's affecting function.
Cy Soto
This is typical of Titegroup at lower PF. This powder is very soothy when shot close to 125PF but it burns cleaner at higher PF.
moose76
You have reached the point were the charge is no longer sufficient to seal the case against the chamber. Combined with the fact that TG is dirty, gives you the results you are seeing.
dagger10k
Clays works well for minor loads in 40S&W in my experience. Much cleaner than titegroup.
kamikaze1a
Try a slightly firmer crimp...causes the brass to expand more/seal against the chamber.
2147
Go back to your 3.5 and call it good.
Cy Soto
Clays works well for minor loads in 40S&W in my experience. Much cleaner than titegroup. Personally, I find Titegroup to be a bit more accurate than Clays in .40 S&W Edited to add: Shooting Minor Edited March 24, 2011 by Cy Soto
Waterfowl-widowmaker
Thanks guys, I put a little more crimp on it and it fixed the problem.
