dajarrel
I'm guilty. I fuss and moan about drivers with IQ's lower than the speed limit driving down the road talking on the phone. I won't get into how they usually drive less than the speed limit or either are traveling at mach 2. Nor how they tend to stay in the left lane and totally ignore all other traffic. But every afternoon when I get off work, as soon as I pull on to the highway and get my truck pointed due south, I call my wife. Usually the call is less than a minute, just to let her know I've left work, but I'm on the phone. I really would not be against legislation to ban cell phone usage While on the road and at the wheel. But that's my opinion. This isn't a hate thread. I'm just curious how many folks do as I do and gripe about cell phone usage with one to our heads? dj
Phil Dunlop
Not only do I use a cell phone whilst driving, but I also adjust the heater and radio and change cds when I need to. I don't have a problem with anybody doing this, just hope they, like me, are happy to take responsibility for their actions. P.D.
Shooter Grrl
I do talk while driving - but I use a headset and voice dialing (I LOVE HI TECH GADGETS!)
Matthew_Mink
Hmmm, 100% so far.
TriggerT
I use mine for work, so I am on it probably 2 or 3 hours per day. I use it some in the car, but try to avoid it as much as possible. My 2+ hour round trip to and from work is about my only "alone" time.
warpspeed
It is against company policy so of course I do!
mpolans
I admit it...I do. I know it's a distraction, so I try to minimize when I use it. I try to only use it when I'm in the "slow" lane and going straight at a steady speed. FWIW, I don't buy into the idea that a "hands-free" system is any more than marginally safer...I think the real problem is the distraction of carrying on a conversation. Some might say that you have the same level of distraction as if you're conversing with a passenger or adjusting the stereo. I agree. However, I don't think that nullifies the decrease in attention...I've missed exits while talking with someone. I don't think we necessarily need a new law banning their use while driving (be pretty hard to effectively enforce too), but I do think that a little more care should be used by most. Swerving in and out of traffic at high speeds while on the phone or doing 10mph under the speed limit in the fast lane are no-nos.
lynn jones
rarely do i use the phone and drive. when i do use the phone, it' s for incoming calls only. i hate it when my audio books are inturpted. lynn
kimel
I use it but I have a car kit so it is "hands free" and certainly no more distracting than having a conversation with a passenger. In the other car where I don't have a car kit I use a headset.
Scooter
There are people that can't chew gum and walk at the same time, and there are those that can. The best I've seen was a guy who was getting off the freeway. The exit is a 180 degree loop. It was raining, and he does a 180 right in front of me while talking on the cell phone the entire time. At no point did he put the phone down while turning around. I talk and drive all the time, but I know when I shouldn't be talking like when it's raining. Then I have 100% of my attention on the road. Skywalker
I too use the phone while driving, since my drive home/workplace/home is a 2 hours drive, and while driving I can work as secretary for my shooting club. BUT, like Shooter Grrl, I use headset and voice dialing which allows me to drive "hands-free". This is the only safe phone use I can conceive while driving (not to mention that this - the headset or livevoice - is the only lawful way to use a cell phone while driving here in Italy). Gun Geek
Headset and voice dial for me, too.
BSeevers
Ok I use my phone 10 or so hours a month while driving. I also do such crazy unsafe things as talk to someone sitting beside me or tuning the radio. Not to offend anybody, but Man do I hate Political Correctness. Cell phone use is one of the "hot" PC topics. Hey if you can't drive and adjust the heating controls then you probably can't use a cell phone while driving. Do we need a "Don't talk to people beside you law too"? Nothing wrong with headsets, I just resent the "law of the month"
John Heiter
I don't have a problem with cell phone use so long as it doesn't impede your ability to do what you need to do and you understand when to turn it off. Don't talk on you cell phone while you're in line at the drive-through. Don't make the bank teller wait on you to respond because you're carrying on a conversation while standing at her window. Don't sit close to me in a movie and chat all through the movie...and yes, the previews are part of the movie to me. Someone move this thing to the hate rants cause I could go on all day. TDean
I often think the reason some laws are invented is to protect stupid people. Some people can't drive to begin with, then you put a cell phone in their hand? It's too bad that we probably need a LAW in place to protect the rest of us from uncoordinated, sloppy people. SmittyFL
Cell phone in ear, laptop in lap (surfing Enos sometimes), note pad in passenger seat (for note taking while on the phone), lunch spread out all over, smoke in hand, and pedal to the medal. John Heiter
Speaking of driving distractions...I just heard on the radio that some major cities are now having problems with drivers watching DVD's while driving. That in itself is bad enough but apparently some of the drivers are watching porn while driving and other motorists are being exposed to it. I just added a new item to my "top ten signs the end is near" list.
JFD
I use mine when I need to. I don't have a problem with it since I have enough sense to keep driving as my main priority.
dajarrel
I made the comment about a new law banning cell phone usage. It's really not needed. In Alabama you can be cited for careless driving. That would probably take care of the situation if it were enforced. FWIW dj
texasag93
How about the moron that reads the paper while driving!? Yes, I talk on my phone while driving. I don't have a problem doing both. TXAG
