TruePunisher
I'm thinking about dabbling into some Open shooting and I don't have the funds to buy a 2011 type pistol and I don't perform well with Glocks so i'm thinking setting up my M&P 40. I have seen very little info on M&P Open pistols and they seem to be set up for 9MM minor. Is a M&P 40 just a horrid idea or is it something that can be done semi affectively by a novice. I'm not looking to be a GM with the thing, but would like to use it for local matches and have fun, but still be somewhat competitive. If I want to be more competitive I will step up to a 2011 in the future. The setup I am thinking about is a SJC comp with a JPoint/Deltapoint, but I am open to options. Any information would be very helpful to the Open game in general. I've been reading and searching the forums here, but if somebody has links to specific topics I have overlooked please share. Alfie
It's tough to be competitive with .40 in Open due to the # of rounds you can fit in the magazine. Now what you can do is get a 9 mm conversion barrel and some magazines and shoot that same M&P in Open.
splashdown
Have you seen our 40 open thread? http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=77956&st=200&p=1271354&hl=40%20open&fromsearch=1entry1271354 I think I can make A class with my 40 open gun next season. soaringf22
I'm sure there are one or two M-GM in Hawaii that have made it there with 10 round mags. I wouldnt let the mag issue be too big of a deal because there are also plenty of people who shoot 9mm and 38 super who stick with just their 140mm tubes. I know there are extensions for the m&p to get 20 rounds, which means only one reload which isnt terrible. unless there is a texas star and takes every round i have loaded and still get a couple no shoots

Most classifiers have low round counts anyway. With .40 open there is no real disadvantage in shooting classifiers to get to M-GM. The disadvantage occurs when shooting matches where capacity makes a difference (number of reloads or lack of having to reload). There is one guy in our club that has a .40 open gun. Even with light bullets, it looks like the gun has a lot more 'recoil' than a 9major or 38S/SC gun. I'm sure it'll still be fun so go ahead and try it, if you don't like it, you can probably sell the stuff to shooters in a state like mine where we shoot Open-

Kudos to you bro! Shoot what you like and if you are willing to set a budget and stick to it. By all means build it and have fun. I introduced practical shooting to a close friend of mine last year. He started off in production, then He built the G17 w/ the usual SJC comp/barrel/jpoint set up for open. Had a blast! Ran through D class and is now a B in Open. BTW, as of 2 months ago, he now runs a Open 2011 by JV Dynamics. (You may or may not follow the same path)
Joe4d
There are some good used sti open guns showing up on the classifieds with good prices, You will spend alot of time and money on the M&P, and end up with a non competitive, problematic, gun with little to any resale value. There is a reason 2011's with frame mounted C mores dominate open, they are simply the best tool for the job.

I can be set up for under $1000 if I use the M&P... there is no way I can get a 2011 for that price. I understand the advantages for the 2011 pistols, but I don't have $3000+ to drop on a 2011 and mags just to dink around with. My dream gun would be a SVI in 38 Super Comp, but if a M&P 40 will work for the time being then I would like to experiment with it. I'm not looking to win matches or be a GM with the thing, just have fun and upgrade when or if I decide I like Open more then Production or Limited. I wouldnt worry about resale just because you can put all the original parts back on and have a normal m&p again. you have the right idea about having fun, and open is definately a lot of fun. and you also have the bonus of not having to do the duck walk after a stage looking for 38 super brass. Also building on a budget is a lot more fun because its harder, thus being more pleasing to use.

If not, then "open" and "major" are tough to come by with factory loads (yeah, I know about AA's .355 Super - nice, but kinda spendy). 40 facotry ammo solves that. SJC figured that out some time ago & offered a Glock based solution. and, 2) are there mag restrictions in your state? I think CA and HI might make Open a tough/expensive proposition with mags over 10 rounds. Canada is in the same boat. 40 might make a lot of sense in those states & Canada. 3) Do you already own the gun? Might be worth working with what you have rather than starting over.
