revolvers for Retro category

I went ahead last year and got a 4" S & W 686SSR to shoot in ICORE Retro and for it to also be legal in IDPA. I'm eventually going to get another revolver set up for strictly ICORE (still in Retro) and was wondering what seems to be the more popular models and barrel lengths. I was thinking of looking for a 6" 586 but haven't really tried any other models, K frames or other options. Thanks for any input. Mark

What you have is perfect but if you just need a new gun buy a 686 6" for the longer sight radius. Buy att least 6 Safariland Comp IIIs or Jetloaders and you are all set. Get a North Mountain holder for your loaders. I just got one and it sure beats having those metal clip holders all over the place. All your loaders will be right in front of you when you need them.

Mark,

The 686 SSR is a good multi-sport choice.

In my opinion, it's awfully hard to beat a 5" or 6" K-frame for Retro.

L-frames are great, versatile guns but the full lugged versions are much heavier than they need to be for 120000PF ammunition and don't load as easily with speedloaders as a K-frame.

S&W currently catalogs a Model 14. There are lot's of good used ones still in circulation too.

Maybe Jack Weaver had this all figured out long ago after all...

I've been having a lot of fun w/ my 6" 686-0 in Retro. Got one of Bob's North Mountain Comp III holders and wouldn't think of using anything else! As mentioned previously, the advantage gained in sight radius w/ a 5" to 6" barrel will help, but the full lug barrel does hinder transitions when compared to the lighter barrel contours.

However, in the spirit of staying "Retro", at our next local ICORE match I'm going to use a recently aquired police trade-in model 64-3 with factory stocks and original Melvin Tyler T-Grip, basic leather holster, and HKS speedloaders. OR, I may use the model 14-4 that I'm on my way to pick up as soon as I finish typing this.

Thanks for the help. I'm not having any problems with my current gun, but figure I might as well get a second one for a backup, just in case. Plus, who knows if I get something different I might like it better. I'm not in a hurry, but will get something when I run across the right one. Bones, it was great watching you shoot Retro at the IRC. thanks, Mark

That's the spirit!

We haven't had a local ICORE yet this year. My intent for retro is my 3 1/2" model 27-2

I too, have been in the spirit of "Retro" as at our last ICORE match I ran my 1954 Combat Masterpiece with service stocks and Tyler T-grip out of an El Paso leather holster.
