Load Data for .40 S&W using Montana Gold bullets

Yesterday chrono'd some MG 180 CMJ-TC at 80 degrees through an M&P40. OAL was 1.130.

4.7gr of Titegroup averaged 911 for 163 pf.

4.9gr of Titegroup averaged 929 for 167 pf.

Hmmm...just checked and 4.7 is max published load and will supposedly give 978 fps for a Hornady XTP 180. I got nowhere near that with the MG180.

Ironically, I got better than published speeds out of the 9mm MG 115 JHP than what they list for Speer GDHP.

In my M&P 40 I had to got to 5.3 grs of Titegroup at OAL 1.140 before I made an avg of 168PF. Forgot to add thats with the MG 180 gr HP

In the next few days I'm going to shoot chrono those out of my new limited gun with a 5" Schuemann just to see the difrance.

All these below were shot out of a SV limited with a 5" Schuemann barrel.

today I shot those same 5.3 gr of titegroup loads for my M&P through the chrono with my 5" SV and they avg a 180 pf.

I also shot 5.4 grs of WSF with 180 lead cast bullets at 1.150 OAL and they avg 170 pf.

5.0 grains of N320 with a 180 grain MG JHP loaded to 1.180 oal in my Edge gave me a pf around 168-170. The MG 180 jhp with new Starline brass, 1.180 oal with 5.2 grains of N320 got me a 178pf at the '09 nationals (too hot, I know. my cheap chrono said the pf was 172 at home). I feel sick to my stomach whenever I see posts about N320; we have a hard time getting any powder at all here much less the coveted N320. I would use N320 exclusively if I could get some; the powder is real clean with a nice recoil impluse in major loads.

I will hopefully be starting loading soon. And will be need the same data.

If you want a soft feel it won't happen with 147gr bullets, get some 180gr or 200gr in 40. I personally use 5.1gr WST with 180gr set at 1.180. N320 is also good but more expensive @5.0gr. But if you want real soft 200gr with 4.3gr TiteGroup set at 1.200.

CocoBolo. you have it exactly backwards regarding recoil. Think about this

both a 22 rimfire and shotgun slug shoot at the same velocities. The only

difference is weight of bullet. Which kicks more ?

Yes, but these won't be traveling at the same speed, the heavier bullets will be going much slower

147gr at 175PF = 1190fps

200gr at 175PF = 875fps

Or think of it this way, which will recoil more, a 230gr .45 bullet at 900fps, or a 150gr .308 bullet at 2700 fps?

Major - 4.7 grains Titegroup, 180 MG CMJ seated at 1.180 Federal Small Pistol Primers 173 PF

Minor - 3.5 grains 134PF

5" STI Trojan 40 S&W

That's pretty much where I am for minor loads in with my STI Tactical 5.0 (12 pound recoil spring)
