raggedclaws
There seems to be at least a couple of revolver smiths on this site and I'm in need of a revolver smith. I have a pre '93 S&W 586 (not drilled and tapped for scope mount). This gun has a 1" slab sided bull barrel that was installed by Clark Custom Guns. I just received a Jack Weigand Weaver style scope base for my gun and I need to have the top strap drilled and tapped for it. I also need to have the front portion of the Weigand scope base milled/relieved(?) in order to fit over the bull barrel. If anyone here is able to do this work for me please let me know. Thanks, Kim
jaredr
you may want to just check a local machine shop and see what they would charge you. including set up time, you can do both operations in under an hour, so I expect you'd save a fair bit of $ just by avoiding shipping charges (you'd have to ship by overnight using fedex, and pay return shipping from the gunsmith same way - cannot use cheaper USPS if you're not an FFL). my $.02 -jaredr
Carmoney
I agree. And you might not even need a machine shop. It sounds like you're talking about pretty basic gunsmithing work that a general gunsmith should be able to handle--you haven't described anything that would really need a revolver specialist. Where are you located? Maybe somebody here can give you a referral.

I'd send it to S&W but I don't think they would touch the Weigand scope base. I remember four or five years ago being able to send my gun via UPS to Clark's Custom Guns for the work they performed. Have the laws changed since then? I don't have a FFL but I imagine that Clark's does. Anyway, if someone knows a good gunsmith in my area please pass the info on. Carmoney
Kim, you can legally ship a handgun to/from an FFL licensee via common carrier (UPS, Fedex, etc.) but the problem is the cost. UPS and Fedex have both declared they will only transport handguns via priority overnight service, and that typically runs $50-60 each way. Some have figured out ways to ship handguns by UPS ground service--this is not illegal but I doubt UPS would honor an insurance claim if the handgun got lost or damaged when their policies had not been followed. Thanks for the info, Mike. Guess I'll have to find a local smith. Kinda wish I'd spent my formative years learning how to be handy with tools. I just spoke to him and he quoted me a very reasonable price for the work I need done and he said that since I'm coming from Rio Vista that he'll do the work WHILE I WAIT! Weather permitting, I'm going there tomorrow. He also said very nice things about both of you guys. Thanks again, Kim

raggedclaws
Just a quick follow up from the OP. I drove to Modesto (CA) today to have Dave Lake at Sierra Arms drill and tap my older model 586 S&W. He also had to mill my Weigand scope mount in order to clear my bull barrel. He did all of this as well as install the mount in less than an hour. His work was perfect and the price was more than reasonable (actually cheap compared to the prices I got from S&W and a couple of other gunsmiths). He did all this while I waited in order to save me another drive from Rio Vista. I'm a very happy camper indeed! Thanks again Dan and John for recommending Dave.
