  1. Sorry, quite the opposite. I believe the powder is becoming less dense when you pour it into the hopper. Think of the disclaimer on a bag of chips. "Contents settle....sold by weight" I think you will find your powder charge will increase slightly as the powder settles in the hopper. Of course this is very dependent on the type of powder. I always label my hopper with powder and charge weight. I guess I have a bad practice. But I just don't empty my hoppers. While I mostly load weekly, sometimes it may be 2 or 3 weeks. If I was going away for a month or so, yes I cycle everything out. It has just never been an issue. I live in a very humid environment, but the reloading stuff has always been in a client controlled environment.
  2. If you are like me and loading every week, which I do. Usually 300-500 rounds per session. I don't do anything. I get the quantity of rounds I want, flip off the power and walk away. (650 with Mr. BF and CF) I think you may be overthinking your situation. I never let the powder hopper drop below 1/3. I have a baffle installed also. There is something to what the GrumpyOne was saying about the powder picking up moisture. Also, remember, the measure works off of volume, not weight. So when you dump the powder and re-fill later you are "bulking" it up.
  3. The input brass is a very good point and a wild card. I happen to have a supply of brass that is cleaned and ready to go when I receive. Side note: almost all matches I shoot now are lost brass. So only recover during practice. To clarify about the primer. I have had ZERO issues with priming on the 650. What does happen is usually with some "WC" cases and nickle primers just not decapping. I toss them quickly and move on. Also the occasional berdan that escapes my pre inspection. I have seen more lately and don't get me going on stepped brass. I too get the occasional bullet tipped over. I frankly have the fully automated press on my mind. Just trying to wrap my mind around the cost/effort ration. I am glad you gave an honest 1500.
  4. Hi, I want to measure my own figures against the community. I will use my current 650 Dillon setup for 9mm 124 gr as a reference. I have Mr. Bullet Feeder and case feeder. A few other minor upgrades. I have more primer tubes than I know. So, what is the real time involved in loading X amount of rounds? Given = plenty of brass cleaned and stored in a bin. Let's start the loading process. Grab plastic container, use a 50 hole brick* to inspect brass and place in container. I do this for about 600 rounds. Spray with one shot. Close container and shake rattle and roll. Load 6 primer tubes of Winchester primers. By then the One Shot is dry. Dump about 200 cases in the feeder and 100+ bullets in the feeder. Top off powder and fill primer magazine on press. Load ~100 rounds, rinse and repeat. (topping off brass, bullets, powder and primers). In ~500 round "one hour" session I have maybe 10 stoppages due to various reasons like flipped case or primer stuck in case. My reality is with the 650, Case and Bullet Feeder, I am happy to turn out ~500 an hour. Granted I may be a little slower or deliberate than others. This too me is a Start to Finish measurement. Not in this process is the brass cleaning. When I load 40 S&W the extra time for X Die processing is another factor. For all the EGW/Lee 40 die fans, I get it. Personally, since I went to the X die, I no longer case gauge 40. Just my preference. Thanks
  5. Since when do we crimp rounds head-spacing on the case mouth? :-) I love my Mr. Bullet Feeder. I have never used a mechanical / optical powder check. I use my two eyes with a LED light focused into the case mouth at the same station the bullet feeder is located. Even before the MBF this was my practice. I do the same on the SDB.
  6. I like the changes as a RO. I know of few if any L1 matches that have a chrono stage. So the 15 second opportunity you get to look at a shooters division and equipment at the LAMR you can focus on the obvious. SS gun in production???? Flashlight on Production gun - Yep had this one recently. Shooter was new and gave me the "train like you fight" or whatever.
  7. Swap out the extractor. Either EGW or sleeved. I have used the PXTs for over a decade. They really don't break, the just get gummed up very quickly. I have been bitten twice in matches by the PXT. Both times it was crud in the plunger spring area. If I was meticulous and cleaned the extractor every time I cleaned the gun (every other match) then OK. I don't want to be bitten a third time, so.... Both of my P16s are at my gun smith now. Being fitted with EGWs and a few other things. Including being milled for S&A mag-wells. I love the Dawson ICE, but it limited my magazine options. With the S&A I will be able to run almost any magazine option. I will be able to run Mecgar $18 tubes with Arendondo guts for 18 rounds re-loadable or Para tubes with dawson at 20 relodable or my 3 MBXs. Just opens a lot of doors.
  8. The web page is a step in the right direction. Did anyone notice the calculator icon on the right side of the classifier lookup page? It is a classifier calculator - nice touch. Apparently they are working on problems. Two I noted to myself have already been solved. Club admins need to make sure the range physical address is accurate for the range map page. I know my was not for it was left blank, so our club did not show up on the map. Simple quick edit and boom there it is. The Chinese menu for classifier diagrams is nice.
  9. I am a 74x(x) junkie. Someone gave me a physically 95% 7400 in .270 years ago. Gun would not hold the bolt back, extractor broken and just gummy. The trigger group is similar to the 100/870/742X, but that is where all similarities end. You will need the barrel wrench, as posted above, to remove the barrel and bolt. This is not a job for the weak at heart. The bolt op handle is also held in by a tiny roll that is a PITA to get back in. The bolt itself is overly complex in the 7400, but the 742 is a certified nightmare to re/disassemble. Anyway, for whatever reason I have become the orphanage for 74x(x0s. They are multiplying at my house. I restore them, shoot them and put them away. Why, I don't know. +1 on keeping the 1100 rings on hand. Besides the staked spring for the feed gate thing, rings have been the only failures I have had. And I have a few of them. Since I am poor, it is my choice for 3gun.
  10. Putting up stages is great. Having people game it and figure a better way is great + educational. <- No sarcasm here. It is really cool to see something and think "why did I not see that". Being a mostly volunteer sport, it takes a lot of effort to put stages on the ground. I am not building walls out of steel or concrete. It's a faux wall. In our faux scenario it does not move. It's now in the boiler plate WSB to stop such shenanigans. "Unless otherwise stated in this WSB, all props are unmovable, walls run from heaven to earth and fault lines extend rearward to the ocean."
  11. Update: The gun shoots very well. The trigger is a bit better than my FNSs. The down side is finding a holster. Since I have as many holsters as my ex had shoes, I figure some glock type would be G2G. Wrong. I run my FNS-LS with Hellwig for Glock. Works Great. The light rail on the 509 is slightly lower and will not fit. I tried Bladetech, Comtech, generic and a few other. No go. Might be able to do something with a Bladetech + Dremel tool. Not so eager to go with a "custom" kydex clam shell right now. I am willing to wait a bit on the market. So running the FNS LS for now in matches.
  12. I just received a note from FN via their Facebook contact, the FN509 is now on the USPSA production list. Thank You FN for the quick response and getting it on the list. Now big question, it's Friday before a match, FNS LS is packed and ready to go. Do I dare swap out for the 509???
  13. At this point, I think I am going to thin the herd. I have 3 P-16s setup for limited. I don't want to highjack the thread - PM about stuff.
  14. I have been shooting SS minor mostly the last two years. One thing that was recently pointed out to me and was spot on. The minor/major issue is not only match specific, but target type specific. Sure, the nationals have been major friendly. Looking at local and regional matches; you not only look at the target array layout, but the ratio of steel to paper. I never consider this point about steel. The greater amount of steel in a match starts to lean strongly to minor. Think about the points/misses and makeup shots with steel. There are not C/Ds on steel, just A. So the minor gun can really make ground up. Not loosing points, somewhat quicker shooting and a little extra insurance round count wise.
  15. Here, I soundly eat my words. I never saw this coming. The gun does look good. If you are worried about parts, buy two. Second set of parts and 4 magazines.
  16. The key to the offer are the mags. Are they OEM Canadian Made? What base, follower and springs. This is where the money is made up. Base P16 can be found ~600 - 800 pretty easy. TJ edition is nothing super special. If the mags are Canadian say with Dawson base-pads I would put them at ~50 each. So, $1200 with the gun being in very good shape, mags not worm is about the top. If all the goodies are there and solid, this can be an OK value. Just a note, I have over a dozen complete Canadian mags with Dawson pads. I picked up 3 MBX mags for Para out of curiosity. I am now using them exclusively and have not looked back. So you need to factor this option into your find. I will slowly liquidate my Para Canadians to people in need.
  17. I am going to stick by my opinion. No, it will not make the list. In reality, Canik has not submitted one yet, why would this be different? Curios, what models? Educate me. I see models similar to above, but SAO models are listed as prohibited. Example SIG has some. Still a neat looking gun with all you need to get going in the box, less a couple more mags. IMHO I think the competition target market is 3Gun BTW - For history sake, the verbiage was in the HG 2004 Edition. Appendix D4 17 Single-action-only handguns are prohibited. First shot must be double action. Looks like it was dropped in 2008. History is Fun.
  18. This gun does look interesting. Could be an inexpensive way to get yourself into 3-gun. However, unless I am mistaken, the TP9 SFX as reviewed in the video cannot be used in Production. No need bothering submitting a Production request. By her on words and Canik's website, it is a single action only trigger. In a round about way through the rules, it will not get on the list being SA. There once was a rule that stated something like SA guns in Production are strictly prohibited. It was removed for not needed, since the list is the rule. They do have other similar models that could make the list. See website link. Just wanted to point this out in-case you spend your $$ on the TP9 SFX thinking one day production. Of course Limited/L10 and Open are ready for you. I think the positive point is, we are seeing a good bit of new polymer guns come to the market. I have stressed about aftermarket parts and such in the past. More and more I could care less. I think if the manufacture/US support can stand behind their gun, I am good 2 go. Less tinkering and more shooting. http://canikarms.com/series/tp-series/tp9-sfx
  19. Here we go and let butt hurt flow. reshoot period. You cannot accurately score the target. 3 M 3 A has been argued and it has been noted it could be something else. It could even be six mikes. Nothing saying the paster did not fall off from impact in HC. But it's irrelevant. Even if you scored it 3 M 3 A, we forget the second shooter involved. The other shooter(s) involved. The one that is potentially beaten by an A that never was. We have to be impartial and equitable.
  20. True. Ruger makes a ton of stuff for others in Pine Tree. I have some Springfields with frames from Brazil. Kimber's are 80% in New Jersey (Aero). None of the above would stop me from buying one of their products. I think QC is much more important and what would make me take a closer look at the name stamped on the final product.
  21. Jeez, crapping on something that has not seen the light of day. I run Para's, they run a hell of lot better than me. I am wierd, I like an all Poly gun like Glocks or all Steel. Never really took to STI very well. Granted, we may never see one for real. TT was shooting unicorn Para's and mags while us norms where begging for parts. So I do think Remington has a bit to do to recoup lost reputation of Para. BTW - I have owned a RIA wide-body and I DO think they provide a great bang for the buck.
  22. I have a good bit of experience with the SDB and 550s. I like them both. I think way too much is made about indexing. Two things come to mind. The SDB does have a smaller work area and this seems to impact my speed at tad. Too me it is less about physical space as vision. I like looking 3 places every time I pull the handle, it seems the 550 has more options to see. The 550 you can add a case feeder (OP does not want) and caliber options are 10x. I have kept 550s and SDBs in multiples on the bench. 550 for "main" caliber and SDB for small batches. All that has changed now. I have seen the light. I now have a 650xl with Mr. Bullet Feeder and Case Feeder. I no longer reload. I feed a machine that reloads for me. Love it. But, even with this - I have a SDB still setup dedicated for 45acp and plan to re-setup a 550 to do small batches for rifles and other weird stuff. Left on an island with only a single option - probably would get a 550 and reminisce about the 650 setup. 550 just has so many caliber options.
  23. Plates at 35 yards are no issue, but incorrect plates are an issue. My point was the rules are there to align our sport at a local -> national level. Could you imagine registering for a Level II 14 hours away, hotel and travel. You get there and they tell you the 45acp is not allowed for it's considered > .401 caliber - range rules sorry. The scenarios could go for pages. It also works in reverse. Shooter is signed up SS and has a mag and pouch on the front of his belt right above the fly. "He's told It's OK, its only a local match and only use it for emergency". This goes on for 9 months at his local club, shooter gets gooder. Goes to big match, shoots a couple of stages - The right CRO sees his setup and welcome to open. So who did this do a disservice too? I try to follow the rules 100%, some say I am a bit to much of a follower. But to err is human and I have failed more than once on the 100% myself. I will give myself somewhat of a pass if it is ignorance, pointed out and corrected. Not so much if it is intentional, I would loose sleep over such.
  24. Years ago I drove 2.5 hours to shoot a USPSA match. Two stages had 10 + 4" plates at 35 yards. I was like What?? MD - We ran out of targets and this is more fun anyway. Never went back, club is no longer affiliated. I call this a self correcting problem.
  25. MBX all the way. Load them to capacity and let them sit for a day or two. Good 2 Go.
