  1. DON'T DO IT - high potential to screw up your barrel, and should never be necessary. If the gun will not run reliably, tell us what the problem is and we can help you troubleshoot. If the inside of a new barrel's chamber is visibly rough, send it back to the manufacturer for replacement.

thanks, I think I will stear clear of polishing.

  2. On the subject that it runs on his lower, but not yours- I have about 15 different carbine length buffer springs at the shop right now from 4 different manufacturers. Free length varies by almost an inch, and number of coils varies by 3 full turns. All 4 makers claim "mil-spec" for their buffer components. I GUARANTEE you that if you were running on the ragged edge of cycling pressure some would function and others not. I don't ever guarantee functioning of rifle components unless customer brings me the whole rifle AND the ammo they intend to use. I comped an XDM 9mm for a customer, exact copy of the one I had been shooting. He told me he was shooting remanufactured 115gr 'factory spec' ammo. I test fired with factory ammo, and he trashed my work at the next pistol shoot because it wouldn't cycle. I found out from the guy he was buying the ammo from that he was shooting very light practice loads, as in like 950 fps range!?! Now I won't modify anything that effects cycling without the customer's ammo, and make it CLEAR that I can't guarantee function should he change the load.

On another note, I have noticed that the gas passages on some of the adjustable blocks (Syrac in particular) are somewhat of a maze for the gas even when full open. Larger than the barrel port hole, but more restrictive than the .159 straight hole of a fixed block. Seems like as long as it exceeds the smallest restriction in the system ( barrel hole) it shouldn't matter, but I still wonder.

I have also noticed two of the mil spec rifle springs are not the same length. I changed both rifles to the JP springs. JP spring both the same and consistant. period no guess to what it is.

  3. Could still be a misaligned gas block. I usually use a .025 feeler gauge to set the gas block slightly forward then test the gas by taking off the comp, droping the bolt and running compressed air into the muzzle. You can hear the change in gas as you move the block around. When you get the best air flow you have reached the sweet spot and that is the maximum air flow through that block. If that doen't work try a different gas block. I would try all those thing before I enlarged the hole in the barrel.

    Doug

thats a good idea of running compressed air. how do you use the feeler gauge? between the back of the gas block and the step or shoulder on the barrel?

also mpeltier did have some good tips on the other post about "gas block and pin leaking"

    thanks

  4. thanks MPeltier. some good pointers with chamfering bbl and gasblock and credit card thickness. I did get the rifle to work! I went back to the standard carbine gas tube. In the photos that is a "fat tube". Before assembling the topend I would blow into the gas tube and take notice of where the air stops and begins into the bbl gas hole. Having that credit card thickness is about the right spot for gas flow.

I dont think I had that space before, it was up against the step. When I removed the gas block prior this replacing the gas tube, you can see the discoloration from under the gblock from the gas escaping.

Now there is no gas escaping at all. The gun is a 16" carbine length gas with a rifle stock/buffer and JP buffer spring. Full weight BCG.

Shooting extreme 55grs, 26.0 grs H335. From my last chrono test is was near the 3000 fps. A fellow shooter shot up my chrono for now.

Had I know about the chamfering bbl and block, I would had done that, Seems to make sense.

thanks to all, am learning )

  5. question, why do some 40/10 cal. slides have a curved area opposite of the ejection port, at the rear hood location? I have seen many slides without this curved area, where it is just straight and some older Colt Delta guns 10mm, have this curved section.

What type of barrel would you use for a replacement? Or is the replacement barrel fitted to fit this curved area?

    thanks

  6. when I blow into the gas tube I can see bubbles from the Loctite come out from the gas tube and C pin. I was experiencing short storking. Came home and took apart the barrel assembly.

Why would it leak from this area? Not from the gas block making contact with the barrel only from the gas tube and pin.

Would buying a better gas block help or is there a technique to this that I don't know about????

    thanks

  7. Why would the bolt not pick up the next round from the magazine????? When I load only one round, the bolt will pick that up but loading two or more the bolt will only get the first one and none others?????

I did follow someone tip on screwing in the mag latch a few turn more. I guess that was suppose to raise the magazine but I didn't notice that.

And the magazine after the last round will not hold back the bolt. That's really doesn't matter me as much as not picking up more rounds!!!!!

    thanks

BTW these are reloaded rounds that am making.))))

  8. when making 223 loads what would I stride for? Power factor/velocity or what shoots best in my rifle??

my setup is a 16" barrel/fat tube. Xtreme 55grs. starting with 24.5 H335/2.220 OAL. Am going out tomorrow to try this and sight in/chrono.

taking my RCBS loading stuff/scale/powder drop to load at the range as I check velocity.

    any tips. please

    thanks

  9. What is a small base die? I have been reading up on the forum before I start reloading. I do a Redding FL sizing die and seating die but how can I tell if the FL die is a small base die?

Would it be marked on the die?

    thanks

  10. SV Singles Stacks.......We call them expensive, totally rocking cool heaters/blasters/smoke poles ect........or harder to acquire than the wide body's. Think of them as a rare vintage bottle of wine. Ya know that they are out there and you want one. It is just finding the funds to make it happen for most folks.

    Team SV Infinity
