  1. Hello, a simple question to the adventurous ones: Is it technically possible to resize 357sig cases into .40s&w? Has anyone done this? How long is the resulting necked up case? Need of trimming? Thx! t tommi
  2. No worries mate, plenty of good iron sights shooters here t tommi
  3. Hi! I don't know a thing about you getting slots etc. but I have to concur with the above. Team Finland semi auto standard (for short: iron sights, comp yes, bipods no) will certainly whup your precious American A$$ (if you manage to get a team) t tommi
  4. Just to let shooters not visiting IPSC Global Village know. Preliminary dates: Pre-match: 7-10 july Main-match: 13-17 july. The Plan says Four days of shooting for the competitor. more info should appear in: http://ipsc.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=7999 Hope to see the best riflemen in Norway! t tommi
  5. Here is one good Internet resource: http://www.odcmp.com/USAMU/Shooting_Tips.htm t tommi
  6. trapr: Yes, I thought about that as well. I'm using an 18" 5.56 AR-15 right now and my 6.5Grendel has a 22 2/3" barrel. 22" might be some sort of a compromise. Add to that about 2.5" F2 comp. Hereabouts we shoot a lot of long distance paper and the shorter the barrel is the better the comp works allowing faster double alphas. t tommi
  7. Hi, I'll be building another upper for rifle ipsc and 3gun. So far all the threads about barrel length have been about 18 vs. 20 inches. But how about something longer, maybe 22" with the front sight as far forwards as possible? Would it give any advantage? My barrel blank is 700mm X 26mm (27" X 1") so I could make it longer. BTW I'll have it chambered for 5.56nato, cause I really like neck-sizing only for training rounds. The master plan is to omit the gas hole and use it as a dedicated 22lr ciener upper until my Bushmaster barrel wears out. t tommi
  8. KurtM: Yeah, the thread was about suppressing muzzle blast or something:) I thought to add some more consideration to suppressors. I forgot one more bad thing: suppressors stay hot for a long time thereby giving a big thermal signal. Makes maybe no difference for you if you are fighting 3rd world insurgents in far away places but as we still train for WW3 we have to give it consideration. Lately our big and friendly neighbour is investing increasing oil and gas revenues on getting strong again. I have no clue so far where and when the rifle nordics will be held. I hope I can participate. I'd like to fly to the US for 3gun as well but a new kid (scheduled for march 08) and a freshly bought home keep me busy and poor:) Cheers, Tommi Verho
  9. " A sound suppressor does both, but they can be hard to come by." KURTM Depends on where you live. Hereabouts sound suppressors are a lot easier to get by than most nice comps. Some years ago here in Finland there was even talk about making them mandatory for hunting because of noise pollution concerns. A sound suppressor has some drawbacks: - the smaller and more efficient it is, the more it heats up - serious mirage problems with more than 3-5 shots fired in rapid succession - it blows some of the crud back into your action for more cleaning - if gun cleaning is neglected, use of a suppressor corrodes the barrel a lot faster - they weigh a lot, making for less balanced rifles if barrel is not cut accordingly - in larger calibers using short barrels (eg 338 LapMag) slow powders can blow them up:) (unburned powder ignites explosively inside the suppressor) But they can be fun as well and I like to keep my hearing. t tommi
  10. Bigbrowndog - For you to send them w/o an export permit would be illegal. Receiving them is ok. On the other hand, (using approximate values) 2 X usgi mag, 30$ + 40rds ISMI spring, 10$ + magpull follower, 3$ = 43$ and you get one 45 rounder and one 15 rounder. Using a broken mag for the bottom would make one 45 rounder costs only 28$. And these work 100%.. Glue and fiber glass costs are negligible. A similar DPMS 45 rounder costs something like 80$ - 90$. Imported here even more. And on the top of it "I made it!" t tommi
  11. As those 30+ cap magazines are hard to get & expensive over here, we do them ourselves. Just gut two normal USGI 30 rounders and tape them together with some overlap. Next use a hacksaw or beltsaw and cut both mags. Next file the ends smooth, check for good connection and glue with splints (for example ice cream sticks). Let the glue dry well and wrap the magazine with resin and fiber glass cloth cut into about 1.5" wide dressings. Then wrap hockey tape over the fiber glass while the resin is still liquid. This pushes the resin into the fiber glass cloth and makes for no air bubbles. Makes the mag look nicer as well. Using a hair dryer makes the resin dry faster. After drying of the resin smooth the interior and equip your new highcap mag with an ISMI 40rds spring and Magpull follower. The ISMI 40rds spring functions perfectly IMHO in mags from 40 to 52 rounds. The short leftover upper piece of the other mag can be used for a short sandbag/hunting magazine. For first time guessing the correct overlap of the mags to be sawed and subsequent roundcount I looked at the picture of a DPMS's 45 rounder. W/o counting drying times making a highcap AR15 mag only takes about 15min. Costs = 2 X 30 rounder + ISMI 40drs spring + 1 Magpull follower + some rapid glue and resin+cloth + hockey tape. For the bottom piece I've used mags with cracked lips as well. Saves the trouble of dumping them:) t tommi, Finland
  12. Here on the right side of the pond the latest craze is the Swarowski Z6 1-6X24. The field of view is extraordinary wide and free of distortions, the reticle is good, the dot size just right etc. Only thing - it is rather expensive.. http://www.bearbasin.com/swarovski-Z6-riflescope.htm t tommi, Finland
  13. Thanks for the info, I PM'd mike.45 I am lazy practising so strong hand reloading sounds more fumbleproof. I also believe the European Champs were won last year using these holders. t tommi
  14. Because I like shooting an iron sighted rifle much more -> standard Because I only have a standard pistol -> standard Because I only have a standard shotgun -> standard According to the rules I can not participate in tournament open class if none of my division classes are open. ergo I can shoot in open class with my iron sighted rifle, but this makes no sense to me. I can shoot open with my standard pistol, makes no sense I can shoot open with my standard shotgun, ok I loose some points with my low cartridge capacity but what the heck In my opinion the IPSC Tournament rules suck. STD, all guns standard OPEN, all guns open TACTICAL, rifle open, other guns standard PRODUCTION, handgun PD, other guns standard. would be MUCH better and the divisions would have more even participation numbers as well. As for now tournament open class will suck in about 70-80% of the competitors making the other divisions less interesting.
  15. Hi, do those single cartridge plastic belt holders still exist? I saw some about ten years ago but didn't buy any.. You can stick any number of them on your belt and they are fast to use because you can rip the cartridge straight out of them w/o lifting it first up. view from above (omit the dots) SG cartridge is inserted into this C-formed holder ........................ ..... |......... |..... .......\......../...... .........------......... ---------------------- belt .........------......... Thanks for any info! t tommi
  16. Hi again. To make myself more clear, major is a big no-no even with our long distance papers. I tried to say that it is even less wortwhile with an iron sighted gun. As for division shopping: I wanted to shoot the tournament completely in standard but might have to try open shotgunning to get myself into open tournament class. This because open class will have all the other good shooters and about three times more of them. I'd just rather be third in a contested class than first in a class with no real opponents.. t tommi
  17. Hi, I have been shooting an open AR15 5.56 for a few years now and am changing to an iron sights 5.56 AR15 this year. As well I have a Grendel AR15 coming up. If I just could find the time for ammo testing. IMHO with iron sights low recoil is even more important than with optics - I have no problems hitting paper A's up to 300m with irons if the weather permits. Shot to shot splits are much more affected by recoil with iron sights than with optics. Lining up the sights again just takes up more time than bringing the dot/crosshair on top of the target. So I'd rather shoot major pf in open than in iron sights class. t tommi (still dissappointed by the seemingly lousy show-up of US shooters in our Finnish tournament this coming summer)
  18. Even with international IPSC rules major rifles are not competitive. They are just too slow to shoot and good shooters shoot too few C or D shots even at 200 - 300 meters distance to make major worthwile. _If_ the power factor required for major scoring went significantly down and/or the points scheme were to be adjusted, major might become an alternative in cartridges like 6.5 Grendel, 6.8SPC, 7.62X39 or like. Until that moment international IPSC competitions top10 scores will stay dominated by 5.56. t tommi
  19. Hi! The accomodation in Padasjoki has all in all 40 bunks that are divided in 8 rooms. I'll reserve one of the rooms as non-hairy-legged-area. If the 40 places aren't enough there are lotsa army platoon sized tents as well:) I just talked to Tommi Forsell on the phone and we can get all kinds of 12 and 20 gauge ammo, no probs. As well two or three Dillon 550's with a full palette of Vihtavuori powders, different primers, bullets and cases. And sets for .38 super, .40 s&w etc. About shipping in ammo beforehand I don't know, have to check that but I doubt there will be any probs except for high prices.. t tommi Tommi Verho
  20. Thanks for all the info! I think I'll go with the beefed up RRA trigger 1911user recommended. The price is right and the ar15commers seemed to like it. Thanks again! t tommi Tommi Verho
  21. Hi, I'm planning on installing a Rock River Arms two-stage trigger in my future 6.5 Grendel AR-15. Is it any good? Easy to install, dependable etc? What is the expected 1st - 2nd stage ratio (or weights)? If it is no good what other choices do I have? I want a two stage trigger, my IPSC rifle has a JP in it but this Grendel will be for long range shooting and hunting and I much prefer a two stage for those shots in the cold, with gloves on etc. Thanks! Tommi Verho, Finland
  22. In between the rifle match and the shotgun match there is a free accomodation from sunday night to wednesday morning. I will be your host. The accomodation includes free use of shooting ranges (pistol, shotgun and rifle), sauna and lakes. Food we can buy locally and I'm sure we can work out mess shifts. Ammunition can be bought on the range as well (please inform in advance). Padasjoki reservists training center is located about 40km north from Lahti. Please inform me or Tommi Forsell if you plan to use this possibility. DVC, Tommi Verho tverho at cc dot hut dot fi
  23. Here are some DIY instructions. I might even translate them if I have more time next week. But looking at the photos might help some. http://www.toiminta-ampujat.fi/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=566 t tommi
