Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Thanks for all the wisdom, I'll go back to original parts.
  2. Hi folks, I had to send the slide of my good gun , a Kimber Gold Match, to the gunsmith. Now I have a match comming up and have to use my back-up 1911, an Auto-Ordnance. Well, I put the barrel, bushing, & spring of the Kimber into the Auto-Ordnance hoping for better accuracy. I haven't shot it in that configuration yet, but rounds cycle through it ok. Am I in danger of changing dimensions on the Kimber parts resulting in poorer accuracy or functioning when i put them back in the Kimber? TIA.
  3. Thanks for the input. I don't have a Texas Star, but even if I did, they are banned by IPSC . Some of the things I'm thinking of are clay targets on cheap sacrificial bamboo stakes, so they can be shot closer than if put on steel stakes. Also use of (cheap cause they are already shot up) blackened targets and no-shoots liberally placed on targets as hard cover and penalties, and the dotted lines of the edge eliminate questionable hits. I also got a bunch of spherical one-ball casters on sale and figure I can make a 36ft runway for movers from cheap 1X3s. There are no permanent walls or ports but we got enough stuff to do up one range. Got 5 smaller ranges making up the big range. 6 mini poppers and 3 big ones, and lots of steel plates. I don't intend to purposely make it revolver friendly, though some stages may turn out that way.
  4. Hi folks. I'm running a revolver match, IPSC rules, about 200 rounds, on our little backwoods range. I want to come up with interesting stages; they don't even have to be revolver friendly, but I am willing to bend in that direction. I'm looking for suggestions, gimmicks, nuances or anything else used at other revolver matches that banish the boredom demon. There's not much help or money so things can't be too elaborate.
  5. By flat I meant a 5000 primer carton, not a pallet
  6. Thanks guys, guess I'll have to snap 'em up
  7. Hi folks, Federal primers are scarce in these parts but I know of a flat of magnum large pistol and I'm shooting 45acp in a 6 lb trigger 625. Are the magnum primers just as sensitive as the LP and what adjustment to the cartridge load will I have to make to adjust for the magnum factor? TIA.
  8. Those answers are a relief. Just as long as the RO understands that the reload is done once the moonclip is dropped in, even with cylinder open. Once that happens I'm engaging a target while closing the cylinder and bringing the gun up at the same time, with finger on the trigger.
  9. I do the weak hand reload, keeping my strong hand on the grip. I use the trigger finger to push out the cylinder for emptying/recharging and after it's done the pushing, I'd like nothing better than to put the trigger finger back on the trigger, because that way it's getting ready to shoot sooner and it's safe. But you get DQ'd for having a finger on the trigger, or even in the trigger guard, during a reload. I'm wondering if anyone has gotten DQ'd for having their finger on the trigger with the cylinder open and any tips on finessing the reload to avoid a DQ for this. I keep my finger stuck out as far as I can to make sure the RO can see it, so between than and waiting till the cylinder clicks shut I'm adding time to my reloads.
  10. Thanks for the replys. I think AlamoShooter has the answer. I had the screens about 2 ft in front of the muzzle. I figured that with the remote readout back on the bench with me there was nothing to get damaged from muzzle blast. I got these results under a blue sky and an overcast sky. Next time I'll keep it 10 ft out and use some match 22rf to calibrate. Thanks AlamoShooter!
  11. My chronograph is giving speeds about 30% LESS than the bullets are really going. I have 45 GAP brass for my 625 but mostly 230gr bullets. Reloading data for 45GAP with 230 gr bullets is scarce; I was so desperate to get some data that I paid to join ammoguide.com. They only had one 230g entry using Longshot powder(I don't have any), so I decided to use my Chrony to work up a load using Titegroup. It looked like 4.1 grs Titegroup would be a safe starting point for 230gr projectile. When I took the Chrony out it was covered in a light, very fine white powder. I'd used it last to chrony heavy bullets in a 45/70 using 777, and it gave results in the expected range. The computing/display part is remote and back on the bench with me when testing. The results were very low and erratic, from the 400s to a few a bit over 600fps, with a max spread of around 120fps, giving nowhere near the 175 pf I wanted. So next I decided to try 4.9 grs TG. The Chrony gave an average of 702 fps with one string of 10, SD 11.57. This didn't make any sense, as the gun had a hefty kick and primers were flat. I had a few 185gr hollow points and I tried them with the same weight of TG and got 642fps, max spread 122 fps and SD 51.47. I also put together 3 rds with 230gr bullet and 4.9 grs Unique, the avg was about 575fps. Then I rembered I had some factory Federal 230gr 45ACP I'd brought along. I was going to test their accuracy against the 45GAP before deciding to make the 45GAP my competition ammo. It says on the box they go 850 fps. My Chrony says they go 611fps. I find it incredible that the Chrony would err in such a dangerous fashion. You'd think either it works perfect or it doesn't work at all. I think it's supposed to give a low battery signal if the battery is low. There was no such signal but I'll switch out batteries next time and see if anything changes. Despited the fine dust the glass over the photocells looked essentially clean.
  12. Dang, I already bought the brass, Starline, tho I got $50 off with a coupon at least.
  13. Great info. Anyone try the 230 gr JHP in .45GAP brass in a 625?
  14. MGM specify 500 for their rifle targets. PD, Tks for the link. Those targets are supposed to chime like a bell. Do you find them easy to hear?
  15. Those colt speed plates must be the ones they call sammies. Nice to know the're not dented by slugs.
