Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Hair? Now Owen, you know you ain't got no hair!!.....;-) Roger
  2. Demonstrating proper fly rod technique in any room that has a ceiling fan....
  3. Is there any reason why a 9mm barrel (1911) could not be reamed to 38 Super? Pretty simple operation? Could it be done with hand tools or would a lathe be required? I know the extractor might have to be changed. Roger
  4. You're exactly correct. It took me a while to find that rule, but it's definately there. We had quite an argument at a match last week. Guess I'll have to start keeping the book in my pocket...;-) And a set of calipers...Hmm, is a 200 gr. SWC turned completely sideways more than .904"? (humor intended..)
  5. I guess I wrote too quickly..... I was not addressing a situation involving a non-threat target, but rather a situation where two threat targets could be engaged with a single round without danger to any non-threats. In that context, the book still seems contradictory to me. The CoF rules seem to ban such a situation, but the 'pass through' rule seems to mean that the shooter would not be penalized if such a 'double' hit on two threat targets occurred.
  6. Looking for opinions/interpretations.... A bullet contacts a piece of vegetation on it's way to the target. The bullet hole is in the target, but is oblong, not round. The vegetation in question was not designated as either hard or soft cover in advance. Counts as a hit or not?
  7. I have the same issue; right-handed, left-eyed. With the pistol, just let the left eye take over and make the slight grip adjustment. Early on, I found that paying some attention to a 'push' with my left arm forced the gun into line with the left eye. Now it happens without thinking. As an aside, I've been teaching some women's handgun classes the last few months and we find that fully 30% of the students are cross dominant. Now, for shotguns the story is different...
  8. Good call Kurt. We had to leave before learning the fate of that stage, or even knowing there was consideration being given to removing it. All the way home, my shooting partner and I discussed stages and that was the one that kept us up half the night reading the rule book. Your call was correct given the circumstances and is greatly appreciated and admired.
  9. Not entirely surprised by this....the 'book' is contradictory. CoF 8 states, "No threat target shall be located so that it can be hit by shooting through another threat target." Then, on pg. 47 in the discussion of Threat/Non Threat Designation..."...Hence the rule of thumb: All shoot-throughs count (except on hard cover). So, it would appear that if a stage does allow a shoot-through, the stage itself is in violation of the book, but the shooter should not be penalized for taking advantage (if that's the right word) of the situation.
  10. In the Hi-Power circuit, the wheeled Creedmor stools are very common. There's enough room in the bag for ammo, water, lunch, etc. It's fairly comfortable to sit on, rolls easily, and isn't too big.
  11. Interesting. I share your respect for the prominent shooter. I've SO'd for a lot of the big names and that guy is the best I've ever seen. If I remember the scores correctly, the next closest was 15 seconds behind him over the 14 scored stages. I'm hesitant to criticize the SO directly, having been in his shoes many times. I suppose it all turned out OK. The faulty stage was thrown out, the best shooter there won, and we all learned a little something.
  12. I don't have the book handy, so can't give a quotation, but this topic came up at a recent Regional Championship. Stage had a steel popper that released two 'swingers'. The SO went out of his way to point out that Dave Zvigney (sp? sorry) had scored two hits on each target with 2 rounds fired and that he 'admired' such creativity. As luck would have it, when I came around the corner the targets just happened to be lined up and I fired two rounds, scoring three -0's and a -1. A review of the book that night revealed that shoot-throughs on threat targets were not allowed. I'll check the book and post a direct quote. Anyway, the Stage was thrown out, although I'm not positive that was the reason.
  13. I fear I'm opening a can of worms here... On the scenario just described, in order to engage T2, you'd have to (at least likely) slice the pie enough to expose yourself to T1. Since T1 has not been hit, that's a procedural for exposure to an un-neutralized target. Likewise on T2. A miss and a -3 is a Failure to Neutralize, so there's a second procedural for exposure to T2. Oh, there's also the FTN on T1. So, for the stage, you'd be down 18 points, 2 FTN's, and 2 procedurals. 25 seconds of dropped points/penalties on a stage that probably took 6 seconds (or less) to shoot. This seems WAY too harsh to me, but those are 'rules' as described to me by IDPA Headquarters within the last two weeks. Now, whether the SO is obligated to yell 'Cover' before giving the first procedural is another debate...The 'book' specifically states that if the SO has time to yell 'cover', he should do so, but that if the shooter is too fast for the SO to yell, the shooter gets the procedural. I view that as grossly unfair, but that's what the book says. Frankly, in it's effort to minimize the number of rules, IDPA has created a nightmare of opinions and variations based on the whims of the MD and even stage SO. At a recent major match, the Stage One SO gave us a lecture on the absence of fault lines in IDPA, making sure we understood that "...this is NOT IPSC...". On Stage Four (I think it was four), there was a big black line painted in the gravel and it was adamantly described as a 'fault line'... Go figure.
  14. They probably won't care as long as it isn't mesh on the sides where your gun and mags are visible. But other shooters may consider it gaming as you have the Captain Kangaroo pockets to toss your tac/RWR mags in. I have seen guys wearing worse and nothing said. Interesting vest, but remember that IDPA rules will not allow stowing a mag in a chest pocket. You'd have to rig those bottom pockets to stay open, or deal with the velcro. crday
  15. Did any of ya'll shoot this match? If so, does anyone have the whole story on why the stage with 'aligning' movers was thrown out? I've heard it was because the movers would align and the SO 'encouraged' people to engage them with two shots instead of 4. Have also heard the 'fault line' was illegal. Also that the scoring was messed up. Anyone know the real story? crday
