Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. For a guy starting out loading, this appears to be a good choice. A double charge would spill over and should not be missed... I'm not 100% sure it would. I does fill the case nicely, but #7 is a very fine ball type powder. It is nothing like some of the more bulky flake powders I've used (231, Universal Clays, Etc)...
  2. It wont be the most economical (you'll use more grains of powder per round) but AA#7 should give good results with your 147gr bullets. 6.5-7.2gr should get you close to where you want to be. As always, check the manual, and work up your loads. 7.0 under a 147gr Hornady FMJ works well in my Glocks.
  3. FWIW this isn't a quest for the ultimate mousefart loads... I just happen to have a couple hundred of these bullets, and figure they'd make for a fun experiment. My normal loads are all 147gr plated or jacketed bullets.
  4. I have some 158gr SWC cast bullets I'd like to try in the KKM barrel for my G34, but I'm not sure where to start with load data. They can't be loaded to a long OAL, and still fit the chamber, so I know I'm working with a much reduced case volume. I have made up some dummy rounds, and they do feed from the magazines at a pretty short OAL. I have Universal Clays, W231, and AA#7 on hand. These would be strictly a plinking load... no need to hit a PF, as long as they cycle the gun. I've loaded 147's plenty, and I'm tempted to try 2.5-3.0gr of UC to start with, as I think both W231 and #7 are not ideal for this heavy bullet. Anyone else have any suggestions?
  5. I have run all the way up to 3.5 grains of UC in my Glocks with no ill effects using 147gr Berrys loaded long, around 1.150"... I'm sure it'll still be subsonic at 3.5, IIRC G17 velocity was just under 900fps. There are better powders for 9mm...
  6. Minor update: I called and finally spoke to someone that wanted to fix the problem. They are going to send out a UPS call tag for return shipping, refund the full amount of the brass after they receive it, and issue me a refund for a portion of the shipping. Much better outcome than when I first called them.
  7. My link I posted on AR15.com about it as well. The thread is now locked. I guess someone thought I was "bitching" too much. My invoice plainly states "Lake City Brass 5.56x45mm NATO LC 09 Headstamp New Unfired Box of 1000 UPC: 197706604650"... and the box is marked with a sticker saying in part "LC 09" ... That's certainly NOT what I got. When I called Midway Friday, the guy I spoke to tried to feed me a line of bull about the brass being "made by Federal Premium, who runs the Lake City plant" (ATK aka Federal does have the contract, and I'm well aware of the differences in FC and LC brass)....and made no offer to exchange it for actual LC brass. His tone was rather unpleasant. So I sent an e-mail requesting a UPS call tag, as I did not want to pay shipping back, for brass I didn't order. I also asked for a portion of the shipping charges to be refunded as well. I bought bullets at the same time, and I thought a partial refund is only fair. I received a basic returns form letter e-mail in reply. No mention of a refund for the shipping, or a UPS call tag for return shipping. This may be the last time I order from Midway... and I've ordered from them for over ten years. ETA: Midway has also changed the product page, so it now makes no mention of the head stamp other than stating it is "Lake City brass"...
  8. Just FYI... I ordered a box of 1000, and when it arrived last Friday, it was all headstamped "FC 10"..... aka Federal Cartridge. Not Lake City 09, despite the sticker on the outside of the box reading "LC 09"... Trying to return it, but it seems they want me to pay for return shipping... and I'm NOT happy about the situation.
  9. If this was in an AR... you may want to give the tip of your firing pin a very close look to check for damage. Just a few pirced primers will burn the tip, sometimes cratering it, and then you'll have more pirced primer trouble. A good magnafying glass helps. I always keep a spare on hand in my bag. Cross reference your load data with several manuals... and make sure you are not confusing IMR 4895 and Hodgden 4895 data. They are not interchangeable.
  10. Speer Gold Dot is usually loaded in nickle plated cases, if that matters to you.
  11. Same here. Shooting a stock Glock. If you have a tight chamber, you may want to chamber check a few rounds.
  12. This was only a month or so ago, maybe two. I may try the MB's again sometime, with a different powder, but for now, I have several pounds of UC to burn, and plenty of berrys 147's
  13. I ordered a sample of the 147gr 9mm Masterblaster bullets to try in my Glock. I loaded 'em over 3.4gr of Universal Clays. Accuracy was great and they shot soft, but they leaded badly. Lead and what seemed to be plastic/ploy fouling. I really liked how they shot, but the leading scared me off 'em. Lucky for me I found a good load with 147gr Berrys. [edits]
  14. I had problems with keyholes in a stock G19 using West Coast plated 124gr bullets. The same load shot fine in two XD's, So I'm pretty sure my problem was not crimp. I have been told that Glocks and the West Coast bullets generally produce keyholes, so I avoid them now. Two differnt Berrys 124gr bullets in the same G19 have shown no problems with keyholes yet, so it may be that your particular barrel just does not "like" plated bullets. My G19 shoots ok with the Berrys, but it seems to prefer an actual jacketed bullet like HAPs or XTP's. My best groups have been with jacketed stuff.
  15. What kind of crimp do you put on these, if any? I've loaded up a few of these bullets, and hope to make it to the range this weekend.
