Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. God I love this forum. Just as I am struggling with visual patience and learning to call shots, Brian posts a nearly magical insight to my quandary. Thank you Brian, Flex, and Steve A., and everyone else whose posts I have read on this subject, and on this board in general. Your expertise and willingness to share is greatly appreciated.
  2. While it would be the heat for open, I don't think they are legal for Tactical or Limited. I'm seriously thinking about buying one of these babies just for the sheer fun factor.
  3. That case can be zipped open and used as a shooting mat, ala tactical sniper drag bag style. This I know from first hand experience. See, your bag is more tacticle than you thought.
  4. I've been real happy with my little Pact club timer II for several years.
  5. Yesterday's best time: 3.49. We also set them up at 25 yards and shot through several times. Ye gods, I need to practice more.
  6. First off, you guys rock. There are some darned impressive times posted in this thread. Shot the plates several runs today (after finally figuring out my bo-mar was a bit off and correcting) at 12 yards. My times were as follows: "Best" run: 4.13 clean Avg: 5.00 It seemed like my draw was hanging around 1.5-1.65 and splits were fairly consistently 0.5. This is running my 6" Fat Free out of my blade-tech DOH. And of course, I had the tape on my glasses as well. Well, it is a starting point. I have a ways to go to get back in shooting shape.
  7. Well, the tape trick worked well today in live fire. I only got to shoot about 36 rounds on the plate rack before assisting with a CCH class, but there was a noticable difference in the ease of getting a good focus on the front sight and plate as needed. It is amazing to me that a simple piece of tape can make such a huge difference.
  8. Oh my. I've read BE's book, but I never tried the tape trick until tonight.............Holy smokies, I CAN SEE! I CAN SEE! Try using the smallest piece you can get away with and still not run into any problems iwth vision. You will be able to see left, right, up and down but anytime you try to put the sights to the targets the eye gets blocked out and lets you focus with one eye. Flyin40 Cool, thanks for the extra info. I'm going to work out this morning, and then drive over to the range and give my new found vision a try. I can't describe the feelings I had last night when I was doing dry firing with the tape on my glasses. I think I finally had my "Ah Ha!" moment that I've seen so many others post about. It was so much fun dry firing last night (because I could actually see the front sight), that I had a re-dedication of sorts back to pistol shooting. Thank you all again for sharing. I will post my range results later today.

  10. I agree with Rich, Jim and Kurt that mandating a reload should be allowed during a match. I was going to delete the rest of my post after I typed it, but I had too much writing it.....be sure to read tongue in cheek. I propose the following rule changes be immediately implemented to the Tactical division to not only level the playing field, but so the division will live up to it's name and intended purpose. 1. Pistols: Only Glock 22's may be utilizedwith factory ammunition and factory 10 round magazines. Holster must be of the Safariland 6004 variety, and magazine holders must have snap closures and be worn on a genuine duty belt. No more fancy SV's or STI's, and my 6" fat free is definitely verboten. If someone is really good at shooting their pistol, the RM or MD may, at their discretion, break 1 to 3 fingers on that competitors non-firing hand to ensure a level playing field. This may be done at any point during the match. 2. Shotguns: The only acceptable shotty here is a 14" Benelli. No other mods may be made to the gun, unless they are modifications to specifically make it look more tactical and intimidating (such as flat black spray paint, attaching velcro, or attaching a light.) Maximum capacity for the shotgun is 6 rounds total. Shotgun shells may only be carried "Rambo style" in a large bandoleer. Don't worry about anyone loading their shotty fast - most of the good shotgun reloaders will already have several broken fingers from the pistol rules. 3. Rifles: Rifles must be utilized that are of a factory design, and manufactured by either bushy, colt or armalite. Others may be allowed after stringent review. The rifle must have a 16" barrel, a folding CAR style stock, factory trigger and controls, factory handguard, A2 flash hider, and utilize magazines of 20 rounds or less. Optics must be real world use optics, such as ACOGs, Eotechs, and Aimpoints. If a shooter attempts to use any other optic, they will be poked in the eye repeatedly with a non-sharpened stick smeared with dog poo. Limited rules should remain the same, with the exception that all competitors must buy a new, California-legal rifle with a 10 round or less internal magazine. This is to ensure that any competitor from Cali will have a level playing field when they come play our games. Okay, I will now go take my timeout. Laissez faire, my friends.
  11. While I do like Alex's suggestion on rules for the various divisions, I must ask (because I truly don't know) if the magazine dispute is something that is really contentious among competitors. I shot USPSA 3-gun matches at our local club for 5 years, and I can't recall anyone complaining about there not being a restriction on magazine capacity for rifles. Most complaints that I remember were based on other flaws in the old USPSA 3-gun rules. Can I see the argument for having magazine capacities? Of course I can. I just can't see it being a make-or-break issue for new shooters, or for those of us who have shot a few matches. Someone else made the point above this post that new shooters stay or leave based on the attitudes of the local shooters. I agree, and think this is much more important to retention than making a rule based on what we think new folks might want. Should we limit rifle capacity because we limit the other 2 guns? Well, there are other inconsistencies between the 3 guns, such as the ability in tactical to have an optic only on your rifle, and I haven't heard many complain that we can't put an optic on the pistol and shotgun. The argument that because we limit one gun (or 2, in this case) then we should limit them all just doesn't make sense in this light. I stand by my original "Run what you brung" statement for rifle magazines. I think that Flex is on to the much more important issue, and that is having cohesion among the 3-gun organizations with a consistent set of rules regardless of organization. I doubt this will happen in my lifetime (I'm 29, so my optimism is not so high ), but it is a worthy cause to work towards in my opinion.
  12. Hey Scott, I can't help you on setting a price, but I will share how I browse the classifieds. I have never looked for a complete gear set-up. I am usually looking for pieces such as magazines or belts, or for guns. I am fairly picky on things, and I haven't found many that have exactly the same taste as me in everything to warrant buying a complete set-up. I just made an offer on a group of magazines in the classifieds that were posted with a gun and some other gear, but everything was listed with separate prices. Good luck, and hope that helps.
