  1. I have an update as well on my 17.5 experience and I happy to say this thing is finally shooting very good and I've had three consecutive days of stump shooting with it and great weather. From trial and error I have figured out that it does not like coated bullets, at least the ones I tried and neither does my XDM 9 or 1911's in 45 acp. Not saying they don't work, obviously they do for a lot of people but for me they do not, again at least the ones I have tried from 3 different manufacturers. The next biggest issue and I obviously should have known better on this one but I have gotten away with it on other pistol calibers is the use of mixed brass. I was getting some really decent groups and shots going exactly where I was aiming then just some random, what the hell was that shots, when I knew I hadn't jerked the trigger. Then a few days ago I was at the bench at 25 yards and got a couple groups of three touching then one 3" out and another 5" out, then I got two consecutive groups of 4 shots within an 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" then a shot about 8" out and then on the other group about 10" out then the light came on, the brass. I switched to using the same head stamp, FC and Blazer cause that's all I got right now besides the off brand stuff, and no more random flyers and I am very happy with the way it is shooting. That is with 124 and 115 XTP, 124 Zero and 115 Evergreen LRN. I just wanted to pass that along, hopefully it will help someone. The gun is stock with the exception of a front sight and a piece of pine wood derby putty and a Carver plug in the grip, I really like the added weight. Now hopefully I can find a 34.5 soon!! Mike
  2. My does not like coated either. Tried both 115 coated and 147 coated with no success. I thought I had a 147 gr coated load that was going to work but the consistency is just not there. After I got used to the frame and trigger I really like the gun but not sure how much longer I want to mess with it before I move back to something else that I can shoot better with less effort.
  3. Although I didn't put it in my original post I prefer the Lone Wolf frame over my stock 41 frame because it fits my hand so much better and therefore I shoot the gun much more accurately than with the stock frame. I did adjust the Lone Wolf slide stop a little so it fits better, pair of pliers accomplished that very quickly. I have maybe 5 to 600 rounds thru mine and the ONLY time I have had any issues is when I was trying to use light loads with the 12# recoil spring I currently have in the gun. The lightest I have used with success is 3.9 gr Clays, 4.0 Bullseye, 4.2 Titegroup and 4.5 WST with a 200 gr SWC, those loads I got from the Bullseye shooters and they like really lite loads.
  4. May I ask which Glock Gen 5's you have that are not so finicky?
  5. I have the same frame on a G41 as well and I know without even trying that your load of 3.2gns of Clays would not function with either my stock frame or my Lone Wolf with anything less than maybe a 8 or 9 lb spring. Thats a guess cause my load of 3.9 grns of Clays barely functions with a 12# spring in mine. Have you tried a little hotter load? Not discounting anything else that was said, that's a pretty light load?
  6. Thanks for the heads up on the Carver got one on order!! When I think of Power Pistol being loud in a 9mm I think of shooting full power 44 mag loads and realize its not that bad in a 9mm
  7. Just found the answer to some of my questions by doing a search, imagine that
  8. I've spent quite a bit of time with the Gen 5 17 now and I think I'm finally getting some place, of course tomorrow when I go out it may be a completely different story. I put a Burris Fastfire on it to do some load testing, not a big fan of the dot and its already come off, and got some very decent groups with 147's and Power Pistol, along with some good groups with the Zero 124 and Power Pistol at 25 yards off a rest. I am finding that the 17 is very sensitive when shooting from a rest, at least for me as I am used to a 1911, and also a lot more sensitive when shooting off hand compared to the 1911. My 1911 trigger has been worked on so the stock Gen 5 trigger is not even close to that also there is a big weight difference which contributes to the forgiveness of the 1911, I think anyway. One thing you mentioned Aircooled6racer is the ejecting into the stratosphere, yea not a big fan of looking for my brass in the grass 15 feet away so a heavier spring and heavier guide rod are in order. I did contact Taylor Freelance?? about the availability of the Seattle Slug Plug for the Gen 5 and they were hoping this spring for those being available. Anyone else had any luck adding weight to the 17?
  9. Hi, First post here so take that for what its worth. I have been shooting and reloading for years lets just say long before the internet was here. I am watching this with interest as I got a new Glock 17, Gen 5 and am not overjoyed with its accuracy compared to my other handguns of that barrel length. I have tried 6 or 7 different powders, 115, 124, 145 38 cal, and 147 and the only load I am pretty pleased with is a 124 gr XTP over 5.2 gr of CFE that will do just under or right at 2"@25 yards off a rest, unfortunately that's not a very cost effective plinking load. Using a 124 Zero JHP, which are very accurate bullets the best I can get is close to 4"@25 yds which is about as good as the best 115 cast bullet load. Everything else is 6" plus at 25. I was told from a few sources to try 147, tried different loads fo 147's and got a hold of some Federal 150 gr Synergy factory loaded ammo, I have had 5 shot groups close to a foot, nothing less than maybe 8" at 25 from a rest so mine definitely does not like the heavier bullets. I will say even though I have reloaded and shot several calibers over the years the 9 is relatively new to me and is proving very challenging and unfortunately I stated shooting it right as all of the what ever you call it that's going on started so getting quality projectiles has been very hard, got plenty powder and primers. Please keep us posted on your progress!
