Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Thanks man, I had this guy do it. I live in a terrible town in the rust belt of western PA and found this guy because he was listed in the existing list of FFLs when I was ordering a Sharps MB47 receiver from Atlantic. I then discovered that he does $5 FFL transfers, does AMAZING quality cerakote, polishing, and laser engraving. I can’t even get a good haircut in this town, so the fact that I found this guy here is incomprehensible to me. I could go on and on about how good he is and how impressed I am with his work, but I have less than 20 posts here and don’t want to look like I’m shilling for him or something.
  2. The THRiL mags are 35 round, so not factory capacity. I got in on their pre-order and they had several delays along the way, so when I got my mags last year they sent me 4 instead of 2. So I got 4 35rd mags for the price of 2. Oh, AND 3 of their AR mags were included in the deal as well, and those have been excellent mags for me that haven’t caused a single malfunction in any of my rifles. They also proactively communicated with us along the way about the unforeseen issues that caused the delays. The company has treated me so well that they made me a lifelong customer. These guys also designed the original MPX mags and the L5AWM. Being as Lancer is in Eastern PA and so is THRiL, I’m guessing it’s a group of guys who left the company and struck out on their own. So it could be argued that these are actually improved mags because they got to take another crack at their previous designs. I will say the stippling in the finger grooves on the front of the mag and the rubber-coated baseplate are definitely improvements. Unfortunately my MPX has been out of commission getting the BCG polished and TiN’d until last week, so I haven’t gotten to test the mags for full functionality yet, but I will the next time I’m out there sometime in the next 2 weeks.
  3. Thanks, just got it back a few mins ago. Here’s some quick pics: https://imgur.com/a/IHktZzV
  4. That makes sense, or at absolute least it doesn’t sound illogical. The main piece of comfort I have is knowing that Taran Tactical TiN’s the BCGs in the Johnny Wick Specials, so it’s probably not too much of a risk. And now that I’m committed to it, that’s what I’m gonna keep telling myself whenever doubt enters my mind, lol.
  5. Yeah, that’s very similar to the explanation I got, weird. Sorry for the delayed response, I didn’t get a notification and just noticed I left this window open in my browser. Anyway, I decided to have him go through with it. He polished it and it’s currently at the PVD/plating place getting its TiN coat now. Should have it back in like 2-4 weeks.
  6. Well now that all my questions have been answered I see no reason not to.
  7. I have an 8” barrel, 16” barrel, 2 Lancer handguards in respective lengths, a Kate Moss, another Kate Moss modded for a Tailhook, Hiperfire trigger, Raptor, Talon, Lantac Dragon and a B.M.D., and a ton of other stuff. It hasn’t been stock in years and I’m not concerned with voiding the warranty.
  8. I’m getting my MPX BCG polished and TiN coated and a call from my polisher got me a little anxious. He was saying that a lot of Sig Sauer Guns have a metal surface treatment that he has to remove before polishing as it is incredibly hard and durable. I’m thinking it’s not on the Gen 2 BCGs or TTI wouldn’t TiN-coat them in their Johnny Wick setups, or are they doing it for strictly cosmetic reasons that are making the end product less durable? He was also explaining to me that a perfectly polished piece can actually have more friction than one that isn’t. Basically, imagine two pieces of material that have oil between them, they’re not going to slide as smoothly as say, two pieces of material with imperfections, high and low spots mostly invisible to the naked eye. I think I’m doing a terrible job of communicating this, but the best example that I can give is that when he does handguns, he doesn’t polish the rails on the slides. My solution to this is to have him mirror polish everything on the BCG aside from the small contact points where the BCG actually rides and glides in the upper. I’ll still have him polish them up a little bit, just not to absolute perfection like everything else. I was also wanting to know if I should have the bolt itself done as well? My initial desire was to have it done, but my guy reminded me that polishing does remove small amounts of material. Should I be worried about it causing issues with the lugs locking up in the barrel? I have two reasons for wanting to polish and TiN-coat my BCG, and I’d be a massive liar if I said aesthetics wasn’t a big one. The other is ease of cleaning. I have 3 Cryptic Carriers in ARs that I have (I’m a lefty), and cleaning them is actually enjoyable, done with only paper towels and qtips/ramrods. I know I’m forgetting some of the details of the conversation, but I’m going to see him tomorrow evening and can get a better explanation of anything/everything. He’s a very experienced polisher that has done guns for some of the biggest names in the industry and had/has several manufacturer’s in-house custom shops send polishing jobs to him, whether total polishing jobs or to fix mistakes that they made. I could be wrong, but I believe most of his polishing work is slides, frames, barrels, etc. and not a whole lot of BCGs. And certainly never BCGs for a MPX or Kel-Tec RDB like I have brought him. He’s a smart dude, getting his masters and working full-time as a machinist for the military while he’s doing this stuff to lay the groundwork for turning his cerakote, polishing, and laser engraving business into his sole source of income. So I trust him and his work and truly appreciate him talking to me about this stuff instead of just taking my money, doing the work, and not caring whether it’s the best thing or not. So anyway, here I am asking you all for help and information to get us pointed in the right direction. Thank you.
