Background:  I have a lot of Sport Pistol on hand that I use for Production and Carry Optics loads, and a lot of HP-38 and Win 231 on hand for my .45 caliber Single Stack loads.  I am just now getting into PCC, and based on a lot of head-spinning internet research, it seems that the conventional wisdom is beginning to favor less-than-heavy bullets with a slower-burning powder for PCC competition loads.

Question:  If I go with a 124/125 grain JHP or FMJ bullet, should I use my Sport Pistol that I was originally planning on using or my slower-burning HP-38/Win 231 that many seem to suggest might work better in the longer barrel of a PCC rifle?

I’m the type of guy who likes to dial in one load for a particular purpose and then stick with it, so I appreciate everyone’s input before I get up and running on serious reloading for PCC.

For decades the Hensley and Gibbs #68 200 grain SWC has ruled for as lot of things. It's more accurate and you can load them hot or mild with 2321/HP-38.

I've used it since starting in IPSC in the 70s.

Some reason when you go online to look for Primers. You see a lot of places advertising Primers for like 33-35 $1,000. What is up with this they don't take cash or credit cards the only use something like zella Zola

Many scammers online these days across the board. Always stick with conventional plastic for payment

  3. Never, the very few times I've had a FTF was due to overcrimping which stretched the cases. This was very rare when I was sorting out headaches of using .355 plated bullets, something I don't use anymore.

Been reloading many years but recently decided to start reloading 9mm on my single stage press (RCBS Rockchucker).

Most of my die sets are RCBS with a few Hornady sets.  Given a choice, should I go with RCBS or Hornady Custom or something else?

Loading for Glock Gen 5 G34.

    Thanks,

    Jim

Only problem I've had with taper crimps is loading .355 bullets. No matter how hard a crimp I used, I did get bullet set back.

I simply went and got a Lee Factory crimp die to solve the problems. The second choice is a Lee undersized sizing die but I Haven't used one yet.  This is the only Lee equipment I've used in over 50 years of reloading.

Baker - For the last 8+ years I have been loading 3.5gr. of 231 under a 124gr. FMJ with a COAL of 1.10” (range processed brass ith mixed headstamps) and it cycles in every 9mm pistol and PPC I shoot (six different pistols and three PPC’s)….I recently (3 months ago) started loading the Precision Delta 124Gr JHP sing the exact same load of 3.5gr of 231 with a COAL of 1.90” and this has run flawless in three pistols and one PPC (just have not had time to try it in my other PPC’s or pistols yet)…..

I know this is not exactly what info you are looking for but wanted to share this load with you because it meters great, cycles perfectly, and is definitely in that minor power factor range…I use this round for all of my steel challenge practice and matches…Mark

Light load, I was running 4.0 to 4.2 of 231.

Hey, if you guys ordered anything from Delta Precision lately you might want to get the scale out.  I always spot check 30 or so projectiles out of a new case from various places in the bag.  I did this with my latest case of 124 grain FMJ bullets from Precision Delta,  They were coming up 115 grains and an occasional 124 grain bullet.  So I kept weighting them until I had one hundred 115 grain bullets.  I only had 17 124 grain bullets when I finished the hundred 115 grain bullets.

This was ordered on the 24th of June.

I have emailed them and have yet to open the second case.  I will probably do that on camera.  Hopefully I will hear from Precision Delta in the morning or sooner…

Just checked my last batch received two weeks ago. They're fine.

I’m at 1.07” in my gen 5 Glock 19 barrel. Anyone have any experience with these rounds?

at higher lengths like 1.08 and 1.09 I would get the occasional fail to feed and get caught on feed ramps. I doubt it’s the powder load because I used 5.3gr CFE-p for all lengths.

i have read in one post the round likes 1.065 can anyone confirm?

Don't shoot Glocks, but my 1911s prefer 1.065.

    Hi Katherine,

I knew Buck. It was 1982, I was 18 yrs old working at Ted Blockers custom holsters in Temple City California. He knew Ted well and would hang out at the shop often. We went shooting with him quite a few times. I was amazed at his accuracy and speed. He treated me great and was always fun to be around. I remember him driving his truck around Los Angeles with a great big "missile" looking thing with something written on it about gun rights, California was trying to get a gun law passed and Buck was all over it, parking his truck in front of city hall and going to rallys. He was the kind of guy you just didnt mess with, and stories were told that backed it up. It sure was funny that I thought of him this morning and decided to look him up online. One day he just quit coming to the shop, only to hear soon after that he took his own life. I went to his funeral, my first, out near Indio California. Military funeral, 21 gun salute. He lives on in my mind for sure. Great Guy.

How old are you Katherine? If I find pictures of him I will see if I can find you and get them to you.

I hope this helps in your search, let me know if there is anything I can do. Danny Blasdell

Danny, did you get out to any of the SWPL matches?

Buck moved to Columbia and lived in a trailer on Ray's range for awhile just prior to Andy Langley coming there. Buck passed away there in the very early 1980's IIRC---it's been along time and little was said about it. PM me.

I don't know about Nichols. There are two guns on Gunbroker that are being advertised as being gunsmithed by him, a Series 70 and a pre-70's Commercial model.

Neither are fancy (that's being kind) but might be worth having just because they were worked on by him IF a provable provenance came with them.

I'm late to this one, but Early did you know Mike Harries? He was at Columbia.

ask Rob Leatham or Doug Koenig 🙂

on youtube there are some old Bianchi cup video's...

I RO'ed Rob at an early Steel Challenge.

Compensated Series 70s started in the SWPL in 1981, although there were problems with them. They were more abundant in 82. That's when the SWPL split.

There were some long barrels and a few long slides, but not in any serious numbers.

I load 124Gr Xtreme FMJ's using 3.5Gr of 231 with a OAL of 1.10" and I shoot this same round in three 9mm pistols (all SIG's) and two PCC - AR's......These are all shot in SC so I cannot provide you a PF number.  This has been my go to round for 3 + years now after I found 2- 8lb sealed jugs of W231 on sale at a mom and pop gun store for $88.00 per 8lb. jug.....but remember - this was 3 years ago......

Round nose? Flat I'm seating at 1.065.

Thinking back on the matches that I went to that had "known" shooters competing in it, made me think about who was the fastest guy I ever saw or competed against. Man, there were lots of guys that shot who you might not see but once or twice a year, there were the local hot shots, there were the guys whose names appeared in magazine articles...and probably I am talking about 1985 and before...too many current guys to choose from, although that would be something to really think about, but for this limit yourself to the older shooters...

Guys like Brian Enos (our host), Nick Pruitt, Raul Walters, Mickey Fowler, Jim Zubiana, Chip McCormick, Bill Wilson, Mike

    Dalton, Mike Fitchman...

Make your choice and tell us why you chose that person...always a story in there somewhere. Be interesting to see who was the guy noone wanted to face in the shootoffs...I have my pick, but will wait a while before telling that story.

Fitchman was never great compared to the names mentioned. I remember when he was caught up in "instinct shooting". Never got it to work right.

Well, I started this thread and after thinking about it for the better part of two weeks, I guess I am ready to name names..I have been shooting for a long time, and have seen most of the great guys shoot, Cooper, Chapman, Fowler, Seyfried, Plaxco, Shaw...most of them really good, but not all of them especially fast from the leather to the first shot...Ross especially was not the fastest out of the leather.

Guess the fastest guy I ever saw crank it had to be Chip McCormick...I know he does not rank up there with the guys who can crank it now, but then, he was the original blurr....saw him do a 50 yd El Prez in 6.20 down 5 as an example and this was about 83 or so....as I have said before one of the local hot rocks was John Dixon in Texas, and I shot maybe 35 or 40 matches with both he and Chip in them...I NEVER saw him beat Chip man on man, and John was just about as tough as they came. In the early yrs, both BE and TGO were fast, but just ask Brian if Chippie was fast or not...almost a toss up going with Chip or Nick Pruitt, but I did not get to shoot with Nick but a couple of times.

The guy was lightning fast in the early 80's. So that is my pick..never won the US or the World, but came close a couple times and did win the SC a time or two...

You never saw some of the fast folks. At Wes Thompson's we had "The Turkey Shoot" once a year. It was a speed match with steel IPSC Item targets at 7 yards, man against man. Bob Munden used to shoot it, Thell Ried occasionally did. Chuck Ries, Mike Horne and Leonard Knight used to consistently shot 3/10ths of a second.

Since he has already been mentioned in this topic, I will say that I just watched a clip of Miami Vice with Jim Zubiena doing the Mozambique on the guy...only the clip I watched on from the PACT web site and they timed the sequence....Jim might have only won the Southwest Pistol League once (IIRC) but drawqing from concealment with latex gloves on and doing a 2+1 in 1.38 sec is pretty fast....shows him breaking the first shot in .85 and the first split is .22...not bad for an Old Timer :D

Jim's still around and several of us were giving him a ration of cow cookies about it on Facebook. I knew him when he was still.married to Linda. Jim wasn't a consistent shooter which is why he didn't consistently place well back in the late 70s/early 80s.

    Here you go Slueth

Any idea who the handsome guy with the beard is at the banquet of the Bianchi Cup #1?

here he is shooting the "falling plates"---that's right, the plates weren't hinged, they really "fell" into the mud.

…here's that holster that Tommy wore---my favorite picture; Rick Miller taking a picture of Tommy and his holster (BTW, I talked with Tommy about a year ago at the SHOT show--he said that he had loaned that holster to someone and never got it back!!

…my recollection is a little different than yours re: cross draws. If you recall in the year leading up to (and including) the 1979 Nationals in Utah, Jeff had set up the Cooper Assault Course which required a weak-hand draw from a kneeling position----it was IMPOSSIBLE to accomplish that from a strong side holster without covering your legs with the muzzle---plus the cross draw was significantly faster---the center line start position with the hands was serendipitous (or so I thought)

Mike Harries taught us to draw weak hand from strong side holster safely. I broke my knee running the CA IN 1978 or 79 up at Desert Marksman. SWPL banned it in 82.

PS Micky, Steve Blankenbiller and I used to shoot ground squirrels from the steps of Steve's mobile home before he and Mike Dalton built up the property. We wanted to keep the squirrels away from our horses kept on Steve's place.
