  1. Looks like the ramping is smoother, but it also looks like the shelf on the catch is a little lower, so the mag doesn't have to be inserted quite as far to catch.

Have you tried manually cycling rounds yet to see if it feeds properly? If it does actually allow the mag to sit slightly lower you may see feeding issues. Hopefully it's just the angle and not really an issue.

Where did you find the catch?
Good idea. Just ran some dummy rounds through it and it seems to cycle fine. Had one FTF but I think I didnt let the slide slingshot forward hard enough.

I'm not sure if my barrel and frame is factory ramped or smithed. It's not a super clean job.

It's a slade tactical para 45 acp mag catch mentioned earlier by another member in this thread.

  2. Little update. Picked up the para 45 drilled and tapped mag catch for my 9mm. I was pissed at first because it was not a drop in but after some filing I was able to get the spring retainer turned enough to install. The para release without the button is actually a tad shorter then ria so using this release without it makes for harder mag changes.

You can see in the first pic it would not sit flush enough to go into the frame.

Pros: much more a solid mag insertion even with the new mags I was having trouble with previously. This para release doesn't require a slam to get it seated!! Not sure what makes it better but the shape is visibly different. So I dont have to get new basepads or shave the plastic basepads anymore.

Cons: My smaller hands can reach the button easier but it's still not ideal. My egw mini paddle is a smaller screw so my plan to use that wont work but I still want a paddle style since it will extend towards my thumb more.

Another con is the extended button causes the release to get stuck if pushed in too far. Happens easily just pushing it for testing but using mags mock reloads I didnt experience the issue. We will see Saturday when I go to the range.

Over all very pleased and it was cheap. Hopefully I can get a thicker screw to get the paddle mounted to it.55f0bee47b88dc35f287aa96cd5730e5.jpg1493f8cde6e8044c3aa1ff8f13ffdf2e.jpg35c2121b663dfed1086d0cd9cd02c930.jpgfaaab10d2ff68a1f48539b0d24ebde81.jpgb61697b5f207adf4181f2451c6ca0642.jpg

  3. Interesting, This one with the hanger is a fair bit cheaper and looks very similar. Where my order not CANCELED on me my plan was to but this one and just heat it up and ensure a good fit to the Tac Ultra

If I was to buy again I would possibly try that one. Mine has height adjustments and cant adjustment.

I have some black scorpion gear from Ebay I had to use a little heat gun to fix the molding and now it works perfect. But to be fair what I bought wasnt designed to fit what i had hahah.

  4. Just wanted to post, since i think finishing reading all 61 pages was an accomplishment...backwards! I was here and excited because i managed to grab a 9mm tac ultra FS HC from PSA the moment they marked them in stock. Used this thread to find and buy all the mags, holster etc that i needed and today got an email that it was never in stock. So now i'm out a few hundred and even more invested in finding one!

Dropped a message to Hayes, maybe ill get lucky and they have something in stock.

    Any who, carry on!
That sucks! At least be happy you CAN order online lol. Cant do that where I am.

On a side note I found that my shadow 2 holster with the retention backed out actually fits my RIA 2011 pretty decently. Will work for my range uses. eede6d5f814331c2cab6c26f9b8bd9e4.jpgf831fdf4a1c6620408acbbb9c4b8977f.jpg

  5. I might be wrong, but I believe Dawson made a Para-specific version at one point.

That would explain all the confusion on my part. There are even youtube videos showing it works lol.

Well I will return this one and go a different route if I can. Thanks everyone.

  6. When in doubt... contact the manufacturer.  the dawson is designed specifically for the 2011 grips, which are narrower than the RIA grips.  I emailed them before I bought, as it was already in my cart...

I found one aftermarket mag release from (https://www.sladestreettactical.com/1911-fits-para-ordinance-extended-45-button-magazine-release-mag-catch-black/), and Gun Craft used to make one (I couldn't find any in stock), but I opted to send mine to Hayes custom to be drilled and tapped for a button.

I don't need a lot of extended length, just a bigger surface for my uncoordinated thumbs.  See if they'll take it back on return.  Hayes' prices seemed reasonable to me, and turnaround time was very fast.  YMMV.

I sent them an email to see if they can accept a return. Thanks for the link! I need the button pulled back a little for my small hands lol. I bought a paddle style button to bring it back just like my shadow 2 mag release.

I was thinking of hayes customs as well for a factory release drill and tap but the benefits of the posilock preventing over insertion seemed pretty interesting.

The attached screen shot is from this thread. I wonder what version this person purchased.

  7. Kind of irritated. Read this whole thread watched the videos and searched as much as possible and made the purchase on the dawson posilock mag release drilled and tapped. Even stated in the reviews it fit their rock islands from some purchasers.

Went to install it and this will not fit........ did I purchase the wrong one? I got the sti version, is it supposed to be the standard version?e29f3253c57654fe2b1bc138fe89083d.jpg

  8. My buddy spent close over $2k on an AOD pistol from them and first range trip something internal broke and they would not warranty it. He had to call and raise a storm to get it fixed. And he works for an ffl so he has gunsmiths that can fix it but that wasnt the point.

  9. I just ordered a Limcat single side, I'll let you know on fit once it's all finished and installed. Pretty sure they take standard 1911 thumb safety, but have yet to confirm myself...
I'm looking at the standard wilson combat ambi for around $60. I think that's what others are using on this thread but they have much more expensive models as well.

  10. What safety fits this thing that is little wider and smoother? Is it just a normal Wilson Combat ambi safety? Or a particular model needed?

Took this bad boy out to the range today and had a few failures to load but other then that it ran like a top. My friends wanted to buy it from me lol.

  11.

If you change to an extended basepad where the follower goes down inside of it, you will need the Arredondo insert and you will need to modify it so it doesn't bind with the spring.

I had to file a fair amount off of the Dawson pads, and a little bit off of the Arredondos. My factory magwell was also opened up a bit with a file. With Arredondo spring/follower/insert I could get 21 or 22 into the mags with Dawson pads and like 19 into the ones with Arredondo pads.

I thought Dawson discontinued the Para pads a year or two ago?
Doesnt look like they have the extended but they have +0 easy off pads still. Those were the ones I was looking at.

  12. I had the same issue with those mags. The plastic baseplate is a bit wider than the factory metal one.

The solution was to sand down the sides of the baseplate until the mag seated easily. You dont need to do anything to the front or rear of the baseplate...just the sides.  If I remember correctly it was something like .020 that I had to remove from each side.

You should still do a quick measurement of the width of the stock metal pad vs. the plastic ones to confirm how much material to remove. Measure, sand, test fit...repeat.
Ok cool I might try that. Stupid question but how did you pop the base plates off? I cant figure out how to do it without using a tool and possibly damaging magazine body.....

  13. So I'm getting the sense that the bushing isn't a "must do" unless there's lots of play in the OEM bushing or the gun has seen a ton of rounds? I mostly run 147gr/150's @ around 130pf and like that recoil impulse, but every now and again when I think the gun's accuracy is off or groups are opening up, I start thinking of trying the 10X bushing... then I shoot some 124gr stuff, the groups shrink, and I go "nope, it's me" lol.

My shadow 2 is the most accurate gun I have ever shot. My friend just put the 10x bushing in his and I have one sitting on my desk waiting to be installed. I did have a 9mm 1911 that was more accurate for me at 25 yards plus. I attributed that to a tighter tolerance bushing but I could be guessing.

I am able to hit 100 yard 8 inch steel with the shadow 2 after a few tries and I am a new shooter so it's not inaccurate lol.

Even if I didnt have one I would probably still buy one and put it in because I'm competing with my friend lol. Any little edge that doesn't cost a lot is ok by me.

I will say I had a shadow 1 long time ago I installed the 10x bushing in (smith did it) that I saw no performance increase for my shots. So that was $100 out the door and no difference really. But my shadow 2 factory still out shot it greatly in MY hands.

  14. Very nice.  I ordered the pro-ultra in .40 and it should be here later this week!  I'm already planning on a barrel swap to 9mm, trigger job, and smoothing everything out.  poor (cheap) man's 2011.  Nothing like throwing $1,000 in parts at an $800 pistol!
I had to pay much more since I'm not in a free state but still way cheaper then my shadow 2 lol.

Are you going to sand the paint off the internal rails? I was thinking of doing that but not sure if its recommended.

  15. Finally took it home. I want a smoother edge ambi safety and extended mag release already for my tiny hands.

I also want to sand off the paint on the rails and even up the "flat polished" section if the barrel but haven't figured out how to yet.

Having some mag issues I need to work out but so far I cant wait to shoot this thing.30f0a067300207b9117b044b4c4c4768.jpg12fad14aadf6ef0f4c55a4642381e602.jpg

  16. It looks like you can take a little bit off with out messing them up. If you do mess them up Arrendando makes flat basepads that might work, or try calling Advanced Tactical to see if they sell just the basepad, it doesn't look like it by the website but you never know.
I have been messing with them all day and they seem to function fine as long as I give it a good slam. The weird thing is the original mag doesnt always hold back on empty mag but the news ones do 100% of the time.

Which base pads fit the magwell on arredondo site? I dont see rock island specific. Thank you!

  17.

Finally picked up my rock island. This beast is heavy.

I have some brand new greg cote magazines that I didnt realize were not the oem metal base pads when I got them. Said oem so I assumed but I assumed wrong. Came with plastic base pads.

Testing them out, the mags have a hard time locking into place on a closed slide. Have to really slam them home or they will just fall out. With an open slide seems to have the same problem.

I think it's from the extra piece on the rear compared to the metal base pad. Anyone filed these down without issue? Or have a link to metal oem basepad replacements I could purchase?5fbb063b350aae015a2c5b61fe5e6a87.jpga1cfcdab4ba4619a7cf34d78883e1478.jpga7fc06103c505311b9e58338685f2f5e.jpg6d3d6dd0a1823b8284fefcb68547247a.jpg
