I have the DR920 and the MR920, both guns are super accurate and will shoot clover leafs all day long at 15 yds. Took about 200 rounds to break the gun and trigger in and I use a firm grip, not super tight. These guns are more accurate than my Ed Brown Fueled M&P.

9mm: 125gr Xtreme FP: Win 231 4.3gr: Mix Case: OAL 1.020

So y'all don't shoot head shots at 35 yds or 50 yds body? (compared to the 50-yard free-style in Area 4 standards). I had this discussion with others that said the same as you but if I have to make a head shot I'd rather have a load that shoots 1.5 inch group than 4 or 5 inch group. Cut out two circles 1.5 and 4 inch and move that around the A zone in the head and see what I mean. But then again everybody is different. We shoot a lot of head shots here. -
Try 3.3 Sport Pistol with the 147's, won't be as snappy as the 124's. only other powder I can think of that may feel softer with 124's would be Solo 1000 but if power factor is a concern it may not be for you PF will be around 125 or less.

You will get an increase in velocity, the accuracy will be great too.

I had great results with DG bullets, currently working through Brazos 115 coated super accurate. Like I said I bell all my 9mm to .390 now and my crimp is set at .378. I've crimped down to .375 with now issues, the issue I believe was scraping of coating and in some cases lead which threw the accuracy way off. Same thing happened with .45 coated bullets. The other reason I don't think a tighter crimp hurts coated bullets is because I load .38 148gr wadcutters below the case and roll crimp over it and it doesn't hurt although if I taper crimp the wadcutters I'll get slightly better accuracy. Never use the LFC die with coated bullets, it definitely swages the bullet down and that's where you get leading, key holing, and accuracy issues. Good luck to you. BTW what kind of guns are you shooting? My CZ's love 124's, my Sig P320 X5 loves 115's. Glock shot 147 good too.

Might I suggest that you add what kind of accuracy you are getting. Power factor and velocity are fine but not if you shooting 4-6" groups. You can bench them at 15-25 yards if you don't have a ransom rest and do either 3-5 shot avg or a 10 shot group and that will tell you if the load is good enough. 4.3 of 231 has always been an accurate load with my PD 124 JHP's and I use 4.0 with coated. -
I'm also going to recommend Bayou sample pack and Dennis may be able to ship them quicker since they have ramped up production. I use .358 in my 929 revolver, that's what it took to get the accuracy from 4" down to 1.5". I tied lots of coated bullets DG, Brazos, Acme, and Bayou's and since Bayou is local to me I run them. The only other thing I'll recommend for coated bullet accuracy is to make sure you bell the mouth of the case more. Me personally I bell to .390 and crimp .378-.379. If you look at my spreadsheet and see groups over 4 inches and see same loads at 1-2 inches that is because I didn't bell the mouth enough.

Sport Pistol is my new replacement for Tightgroup when I run out, used up 8# of it and love it.

4.0 -4.3 of Tightgroup is what I have used with Bayou 115 Hi-Tek coated bullets, PF 129-132. Only issues I ever had with coated bullets was from not belling the mouth of the case enough which caused coating and lead getting scraped when seating. I open up to .390 and crimp .379 and group went from over 4 inches to 1.4 inches and that was 10 shots from the ransom rest at 25 yds. CZ- TSO

Hey Guy's I did some editing and corrected some errors, added new test from this week also. I had accuracy issues with some loads this week and it turned out to be the Ransom Rest pivot arm spring wasn't adjusted properly. It's supposed to be 1 5/8" and it was over 2' which caused some left and right stringing and up and down stringing. Noted it in the data so accuracy wasn't valid but the chrono data is. Remember this was my loads shot in my guns so YMMV. Work up your loads if you need to. Let me know if this helped you out. Darrell's Load Data rev 0311921.xlsx

What is the best powder for 100 grain 38 special loads
Darrell replied to 357454's topic in 9mm/38 Caliber
3.3 to 3.7 WST, use a taper crimp if the bullet you are using doesn't have a grease groove. My standard deviation was 7, shot 1" 10 shot group at 25 yds from the ransom rest. -
I had some Acme 125 RN laying around and since I had my press setup with Sport pistol powder I decide to load a few to see how they would do. Federal Brass, Tula Primers 1.115-1.120 OAL shot .59" group at 10 yds. PF of 128.6. Avg vel 1029, ES 18, SD 6. I know it's not my standard distance to test, I was mainly interested in velocity and SD but I'll take this. Benched with my CZ TSO.

When I'm testing I use 10 round groups with my Ransom Rest, and 3-5shot groups when shooting from the bench. I'm not that good at 25 yd bench testing anymore so I use either 15 or 20 yards depending on sights. With optic I can still shoot 25 yard bench groups. I've tested a lot of different combinations and over the years I have re-tested some old favorites to see if anything changed. Powder has been the factor most of the time. acceptable over/under for COAL and powder charges?
Darrell replied to davsco's topic in 9mm/38 Caliber
I did an experiment the other day with my Precision delta 124 JHP and Redding competition seating die. I notice my OAL changing by +/- .009" measuring of tip. I used my Hornady OAL checker that measures off the ogive and my variation was only .0015 on the same bullets tested earlier. So if I'm measuring off the tip I set one for what I want and let the rest vary and don't worry about it because the ogive from the rifling will be what matters. -
CFE or Autocomp would be a better powder for your comp gun. I shoot 124 JHP's and use both powders I don't load to major, just load enough to work the comp. 5.7 to 6.8 gr of Autocomp, and 6.4 to 7.0 of CFE loaded long 1.150" You didn't mention what gun this was on, not meant for a Glock would have to be on the lower side at lower OAL.

I tried two load. My EAA limited was 4.5gr of Power Pistol at 1.100 for a PF of 136.9, and my M&P pro was with 3.4 of Tightgroup at 1.125, pf was 135. I've loaded that bullet down to 1.063 and as long as 1.175 and settled on 1.100 that worked in all my guns.

Coated bullets most similar to syntech?
Darrell replied to datderecelltech's topic in 9mm/38 Caliber
you should be fine at at .386-.388, I just set mine at .390 for everything now. -
The collet bullet puller are useless on coated bullets. On Hi-Tek coated bullets anyway, the coating is so slick that you ruin the bullet for reuse if you tighten the collet enough to allow the bullet to be pulled. I had about 250 .380 coated bullets to pull and had to wind up using the hammer type puller. I wasn't going to waste 250 bullets to this is taking some time, I pull a few every so many days and eventually I'll be done. Collet pullers work great on FMJ bullets especially long rifle bullets.

2175 different pistol loads I've tested since 2007
Darrell replied to Darrell's topic in 9mm/38 Caliber
Here you go. Darrell's Load Data rev 020121.xlsx -
I was adding up all the test loads since I been keeping track of since 2007 and comes out to 2175 and over 21K rounds fired. Don't know how many I tested before I started logging them, but been reloading since 1973. Figured it cost me over $2200 to test loads since 2007. WOW. Wish I would have kept better notes so I could write about them one day.

yes typo, I'll correct thanks supposed to be .378

Gary's bullets are powder coated, not Hi-TeK coated, different process and product.

I don't think anyone on this forum has tested coated bullets more than I have. I've tested every Bayou Bullet since it's inception. So my testing has shown that be case has to be belled more than for plated or jacket bullets. You should crimp at least .001" because just taking the bell out (.380") may fail to gauge depending on bullet sizing. I have put a roll crimp on 148 gr coated wadcutter bullet seated below the case and roll crimped slightly above with no tearing of the coating or lead so that theory about too much crimp is is invalid to a point. No I wouldn't crimp 9mm past .375 and in my testing .377-.379 works best, I personally crimp all 9mm now at .378. We have tested coated bullets in rifles to 1700 fps into water and the coating was intact, also 125 gr .357 to 1500 fps roll crimped in the crimp groove and got same results. Now depending on the bullet manufacturer's process of coating, that can have a drastic effect.

Barry do not use a factory crimp die with coated bullets. Is the bullet you using one of Gary's?
