  1. I became interested in CO when it went to 141.25 mags, simply because it placed capacity between Production and Open.  I liked the different challenges that offered to stage planning.  Now that (IMO unfortunately) Production is at 15, bringing CO to that same number once again would crunch the two together again.

    Oh, well.

As to LO at Major, I wonder how the slide mounted dot longevity might suffer.  But that would be a choice to make.

  2. We are on the horns of a quandary. 🤔

The “intent” (did I just say that?) of 10.5.6 is during MR. Unfortunately, it does not say that. In today’s environment, single words seem to matter more than they did when that rule was written. Long before my time.

It could use a tweak to avoid match “discussions “.
    😎

  3. The thread drift to popper calibration is irrelevant to the original subject of plates.  The rules used to specify factory ammo for calibration which worked against the shooter during a challenge since that would result in 130+ PF in most guns.  The rules were changed to allow reloads and the calibration gun/ammo PF was lowered to 115-125.

As to plates - the problem is the number of reshoots which result due to all the issues mentioned earlier.  But unmentioned is another common problem: incorrect/inconsistent officiating.  ROs not seeing or ignoring malfunctions.  That is very problematic at a major match.  We teach the rules, but we can't teach experience.

Sometimes, it's best to avoid the problems altogether for the greater good of the match.

  4. View

A range of sight or vision specific to an array of targets. In order to

constitute a new "view" under this rule, the range of sight of an

array of targets must be broken by a vision barrier of some sort,

such that a different array of targets is seen in the new view.

  5. Johnny C is correct.

My late-night post was not phrased correctly.  I was thinking of the old default start position of "standing erect, facing downrange, hands naturally at sides."

The default was removed from the rulebook as was the strict definition of "facing downrange", but the description of "at sides" remains.  I prefer to avoid that as a WSB item, but it still exists in many (older) classifiers and needs to be enforced.

The "below belt" and "above shoulders" are much easier to enforce.

  6. Times change.  That start position, which used to be the default, is no longer in the rules.  As you note, it was nearly impossible to enforce.  "Monkey motions" were essentially unavoidable.

The common start position now is either "wrists below belt" or "wrists above shoulders".  Much easier for shooters to comply.  Whatever monkey motions they want to add in are OK as long as the wrists comply.

  7. The (communication) problem in this discussion is that some use the definition of faulting (10.2.1 and subs) and then apply it to a start position thread.  Those are two different scenarios.  However.....

10.2.1.1 deals with faulting, such as when any body part touches outside the shooting area (the classic "one foot in and one foot out" is OUT if firing a shot).  One penalty per occurrence unless significant advantage is applicable.

But, if you look at 10.2.1.2 and 10.2.1.3 you will see that (for a faulting situation) there is a different penalty level for someone who fires shots while "completely outside" prior to re-entering (10.2.1.2) or "completely outside" prior to entering in the first place (10.2.1.3).

So, IMO, those rules make a distinction between what is OUT and what is COMPLETELY OUT.

  8. Just a tongue in cheek comment that the shooter can assume any ridiculous stance, logical or not, that does not violate the WSB.

The same does not apply to "Facing Uprange" which is very specific.

  9. Your RO apparently has not kept up with rules updates.

This is what the rulebook said in the 2014 edition:

8.2.2 The competitor assumes the start position as specified in the written stage briefing. Unless otherwise specified, the competitor must stand erect, facing downrange, with arms and hands hanging naturally by the sides (see appendix E3 for an example of this). A competitor who attempts or completes a course of fire where an incorrect start position was used must be required by a Range Official to reshoot the course of fire. “Arms hanging naturally by sides” is illustrated in Appendix E3

The 2019 rules amended the rule to read:

8.2.2 The competitor assumes the start position as specified in the written stage briefing. A competitor who attempts or completes a course of fire where an incorrect start position was used must be required by a Range Official to USPSA Competition Rules January 2019 43 reshoot the course of fire. “Arms hanging naturally by sides” is illustrated in Appendix E3.

Note that the reference to "standing erect" was removed.  Also note that the definition of "Facing Downrange" was also simplified.  "Monkey motions" are now allowed.
