  1. My son (12 in July) and daughter (10) both have their own .22 rifles and this year we want to spend more time at the range. Both are very safe and know the 4 Laws of gun safety. I've thought about the best ways to guide them on their marksmanship journey and think I've settled on the NRA marksmanship qualification program (MQP): https://mqp.nra.org/courses-of-fire/ My questions for you all are: 1. How much time is too much at once? 2. How many things should I work with them on at a time? 3. Any other tips or nuggets of wisdom? Thanks in advance!
  2. Scotch-Lagavulian but I usually only get it when I'm on a trip Bourbon- Buffalo Trace when I can get it. A local distillery (Cedar Ridge) makes a good one. But my current go-to when I want an old fashioned is Kirkland bottled in bond. Cheap, but very good.
  3. Hey all! I was active in my local USPSA scene (B Class Production, shooting a CZ since before it was cool ) until kids came and my local club folded (RIP CRAPS). I took a few years off and did some occasional outlaw matches, got hooked up with a small (but very nice) range. Also got my NRA instructor and CRSO cards. Now I've got an 11 y/o son and almost 10 y/o daughter. They're interested in learning how to shoot and I may become involved in the 4H shooting sports. I also recently found myself the head instructor at the aforementioned range, training church safety teams. I hope to learn a lot about the instructing side of shooting and hope I can add to the conversations.
  4. I got my first renewal notice before I got my first copy of American Rifleman. I declined to renew my membership after that first year. I do give them money through friends of the NRA banquets, I just don't get all the mail.
  5. Over the weekend my inlaws did a guys night out bowling thing. I'm pretty bad, but one of my brother inlaws was worse. Then he bowled a whole game left handed and beat me. Funny how some people can transition.
  6. Forced fiscal responsibility in the form of eliminating unfunded liabilities, cry me a river. I hear people cry about the usps having to fund retirement for workers who haven't even been born yet. Truth is the last generation of postal workers isn't just born, they are probably already employed.
  7. C'mon now. An open shooter taking a walk? During Lunch? Shouldn't he be cleaning his mags and gun and checking his C-more?
  8. Love my Tacoma. Don't know if I'll ever be able to part with her.
  9. Wow, some of you folks talk funny. Then again, I live in the accent dead zone. But my grandparents home town was settled by a lot people from Pennsylvania, so there are a few oddities. Tomato is pronounced ta-made-a. There is also a crick that runs through their backyard.
  10. When a buddy of mine pulls bullets he dumps the powder in an ashtray he keeps special for unsuspecting victims. Got me three times.
  11. You slam on your brakes because some jack wagon pulls out in front of you and the 8 inches of snow on the roof of your truck decides to slide onto your windshield.
  12. You'll feel different when you get a sliver that gets infected giving you diarrhea, leaving you Dead In The Street.
  13. http://www.guns.com/2012/11/15/wounded-warrior-project-clarification-anti-gun/ Here is the pertinent bit: "Regarding the question of donations and events, we do permit fundraisers that are shooting- and gun-related, such as gun raffles, shooting competitions, etc., and were incredibly appreciative of those who are willing to give their time to host or participate in an event. Likewise, we gratefully accept donations from companies and individuals connected with the gun industry." Essentially they aren't going to license their logo on weapons of any kind. Still, if I ran a charitable match, I would consider giving to HAVA or Chris Kyle's Hero Project.
  14. That's odd, because this will be the third or fourth shoot. Each one has resulted in a five figure check to WWP.
  15. I'm wanting to build an ESP gun and I've narrowed it to a 9mm 1911(Spartan up to DW PM9) or a CZ(probably a 75b SA, but a 75 shadow if I can get one). My hesitation on the 9mm 1911 is that I've never shot one. Wondering how it would compare to my Shadow Custom.
  16. Trojan is definitely on the list. The only reason that the Spartan is on the list is that I won't feel bad having it carved up with a tri top job and front strap checkering. If I get one, the choice is going to be which one I can get my hands on first. I really just want to know how they shoot compared to my cz.
  17. I've been working a lot and can afford some retail therapy. I think I want a 9mm 1911, but I've never shot one. I have a shadow custom, how would they compare? I'd use it for ESP or occasional single stack duty. My budget is Spartan up to DW Pointman 9, the only variable is how many guns I don't use that I'd have to sell. I would stretch it for a Baer if he still did 9s.
  18. When I picked up my Les Baer PII from the LGS with my wife there was an old timer there drinking coffee and dispensing advice. I opened the box and fondled my new pistol before I filled out the paper work. The guy came over and checked out my gun. He could tell that the slide was difficult to rack. It was then that I got to be the recipient of advice. "I'd send that back if I were you. A gun that tight'll never run right," he said. "It's a Les Baer, he's kind of known for tight guns that run," I replied. He continued, "I'll never know why people don't pay a little extra for a Colt. They run great and come in a real box." I looked at the owner of the store, smiled and said, "not everybody can afford that kind of money." I finished the paperwork and left. When we got to the car my wife asked what a Colt cost. I told her a whole lot less than I paid but that the old guy had known the wrong thing for so long that I wouldn't have been able to change his mind and it wasn't worth my time to try.
  19. First Amendment doesn't apply here. A&E has every right to decide who and what they put on television. What I find ironic is that the pope is made person of the year because of-among other things-his perceived softening views on homosexuality. But if he were asked his opinion on Robertson's interview, I doubt the would say he disagrees.
  20. Also had to look up schnees boots. I'll keep my mink oil treated red wings. Don't have a custom rifle, I shoot standard issue well enough. Need a dog, but first need a big enough backyard to be fair to it. Otherwise good stuff.
  21. People look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them that a B class USPSA shooter is probably a better shot than 90%+ LEOs.
  22. +1000000. They usually don't have a chance to flip me off-I beat them to the punch. Prior to that I express my displeasure of their health lifestyle by flashing my brights and honking.
