If a pistol has been milled for an optic, is a cover plate needed if the gun is to be shot in Production?
-
For those that compete with a red dot, do you also have a dot on your carry pistols?

I agree with the opinion that the 1911/2011 guns aren’t that hard to learn, maintain and work on. If you shift your mindset just a bit and open yourself to the enjoyment of learning the mechanical aspects of these guns, you might catch yourself having a jolly old time.
I guess I'll find out. I ordered a BUL Armory 2011 this morning to play around with. Seemed like a good entry level 2011 for a newb. And since I don't currently own any 2011's, the proprietary mags are not a big deal.

Who makes a 14? What is stock? I’m using CCI’s and Fiocchi’s so I will test. With the extended firing pin I’ve had zero issues with the 11.5#
I think the S2 is a 14 stock. Don't know about the compact.

On my particular gun absolutely nothing.
If you go with a prodigy, here is my thoughts and opinions, based on me buying a prodigy.
First, take it and shoot it. If it works then continue shooting it, if it doesn't work, send it to Springfield and allow them to make it work correctly.
Second, if it works and you want a better (and I am talking feel here, not functionality) either have someone do a trigger job on the factory components, or have them install egw parts.
Third, shoot the hell out of it. If at some point and extractor or ejector needs to be replaced, have that done but that could be 20,000 rounds down the road. No real reason to worry about it IME
Are you shooting a 5" or 4.25"?

Hold up in terms of accuracy, felt recoil, dot/sights back on target quickly, etc.... in comparison to a heavier, steel frame, higher end 2011's against a timer.
I've only shot a couple of 9mm 2011's, Atlas, MPA, and various Staccatos (demo day). With the MPA Limited Optics Competition model, I was able to run it fast for about 10 shots and it was very, very flat shooting.
-
OK, let's say I go with a Prodigy and have someone put in an EGW internals kit. What else needs to be updated to run smoothly? New extractor?
-
I don't hate maintenance if I know how to do it. I'll field strip, clean and lube my Glocks and CZ's regularly. Have switched out drop in triggers, connectors, etc... on the Glocks. Have switched out firing pins, and some springs on the CZ's. But that is the extent of it. I don't polish or file internal parts.
-
For those that have a Platypus, are you shooting it in USPSA, etc...? How does it hold up competitively compared to higher end 2011's?
-
Considering a 2011 for Limited Optics. I'm OK with working on my Glocks. And can change a few springs on my CZ's, but that's the extent of my armorer knowledge. I've never owned a 1911 and wouldn't know how to start the field strip process to clean, oil, and put back together.
I don't like tinkering/tuning and don't want to have a personal and financial relationship with a gunsmith to keep a gun running. I'm not mechanically inclined and have little interest in working on things. That being said, should I stay away from the platform , or is it not a big deal.

I've read of the accuracy issues/concerns with the X5 Legion. Have those carried over to the Max?

I ordered the black brass grid loks for my S2 and they arrived yesterday. Just holding the box they arrived in let me know these were really going to add some heft to an already heavy gun. I installed this morning and held the gun. Yes, it adds weight but the main thing is that the gun is more balanced - not as nose heavy.
We'll see how it shoots tomorrow.

Had an opportunity to shoot an M&P with the new style trigger. I thought the trigger was good but it felt soft in trigger pull and reset.
On the other hand, I shot it well and felt that it was very accurate.
For those that compete, do you use the newer M&P trigger, or did you go ahead and switch it out for an Apex, etc...?

Why?
Nose heavy and double action first pull are my excuses. In reality, I just want to try something different.
I like Dirty_J's recommendation of the P10F. Hadn't considered that.

I'm planning to ditch my S2 in favor of a striker fired pistol for carry optics. In the meantime, I'll use my Glock 17. For those that ran a Shadow, S2, or SP01 for a while and then went to a striker fired platform, which pistol did you go with?

OP here.... a couple of things that I've thought about. Recently, I've been drawing and attempting to stage the trigger in dry fire on my first shot. But because I can pull through the DA for the remainder of my targets in dry fire, I tend to pull through or slap the trigger. Basically staging and then practicing with a trigger pull that is counter to the staging. As a result, I end up practicing the pull through more except for when I only practice the draw and stage.
Also, my hammer spring is pretty light (10lbs) which allows for a smoother and lighter DA pull. Yesterday, I swapped for a 13lb hammer spring which increased the pull weight. However, it is now much more predictable when attempting to stage the heavier trigger.
-
For those that shoot double action for your first shot, do you stage the trigger out of the holster, or acquire the target and pull through the double action? I've posed this question to several Shadow 2 shooters and one Tanfo shooter and received a mixed bag of responses. Some shooters start staging out of the draw and are slightly farther than half cock by the time they are on target. Others just draw, point to the target and pull straight through the DA.

I just don't get it. It's not ideal for any comp division and if that price range of $1400-1700 is accurate you can get a P-01 or P-07 milled for a dot and a trigger upgrade and still have tons of money left over for more ammo.
I just don't know who this is for.
I think it's for competitors who use the Shadow 2 as their competition gun. Now they have a carry option that is very similar to what they compete with. If I carried this compact, I would manually de-cock to the half cock position.
However, while I like my S2 and the idea of this compact intrigues me, I know I wouldn't carry a pistol that large. When I first got into CZ's, I picked up a Tristar/Canik C100 for carry which is basically a CZ PCR clone. And, I've never carried it. I find guns in that size (Glock 19, 75Compact, P-10C) just a bit too large to carry.

This reviewer notes a rumored price of $1,400 - $1,700.

4" barrel, aluminum frame and 2lb weight. Looks to be just like the Shadow 2 but smaller and lighter for carry. For those that compete with the S2, will you want one of these for carry?

I ended up not needing the mag well, all the stages were 24 rounds or less. But cocked and locked was cool. I had to get the big safeties from Eric Graffuel from France. Even with shipping, it was cheaper and available than any source in the US.
How difficult, or not, is switching safeties?
-
Shot my Shadow 2 this weekend in LO just because. Nothing added to it for LO, however, I did run it cocked and locked most of the time despite the small safety.
-
Tried running my Shadow 2 LO style cocked and locked yesterday. With the small, but easy to engage safety, I was forced to draw the gun with an awkward thumb high grip in order to depress the safety, then adjust my grip to normal for my first single action shot. For me, it is simpler and faster to just run it hammer down with a DA start.
I think a larger, extended safety is the first item that needs to be added to a Shadow 2 for LO.

OP here. Lots of good info and I appreciate the discussion. One thing I will add. While I do have some heavier guns and have previously used them in competition, I'm currently using a Glock, which is definitely not a 4-5lb gun.

So... no cover plate needed for the milled slide?
