  1. googled "pistol matches in my area"

found a random match that happened to be uspsa

showed up with a stock smith and wesson m&p and shot production

decided after that match that i hated reloading.

Immediately went out and spent 5k on a limited gun

    shot one match with limited.

realized i hated reloading even more.

came home and bought the first open gun i saw on this forum.

been in open ever since. and i am 4 open guns deep at this point.

I even pulled a fast one and "gave" the limited gun to my wife when she passed her CCW :D

  2. I had a new open gun built by Ben from BF Customs.

Just wanted to take a min to show it off.

from start to finish it took about 3 months, and that included 6 weeks for it to get coated.

the gun metal grey and gold is super slick

    This is in 38sc.

I provided all the parts, but he is able to source them if needed, he works out of a shop so if you have him source expect a shop surcharge.

Its fitted perfectly and runs flawlessly. he hand filed the rails and the entire trigger sear engagement.  Trigger is a crisp 1.5 lb pull.

The videos are shooting 175 pf

Pm me if you want a list of parts.

Pm me if you want his contact info

Those are both great powders and low pressure. You were right about the manufacturer. He has a reputation of building guns that don't always hold up. I'm pretty certain that's where you slide and comp cracking came from.

Was it a titanium comp By chance?

    the first comp was yes

No.  It burns clean as a whistle.  All I have t do is wipe the gun clean.  No scrubbing required.  The brass comes out so clean you could use it again without tumbling.  I read on these forums that there is some variability lot to lot.  So it is possible some of the slower lots burn dirtier.

If you don't like your SWMP I'd be glad to buy it from you.

Why bother.  For 5 cents each I buy once-fired, same head stamp, fully processed brass.  I shoot it once and leave it.  Why take a chance.

    i agree with you 100%

its not worth picking up 9 major brass when its so cheap

  5. i will say tho like the brass cost is a major issue.

I bought 50k 38sc brass at the beginning of 2020 so for me its easy to just leave brass and not pick it up or anything

not everyone is in my position.

Paying .5 cents per round for 9mm brass is way easier, but keep in mind there's no such thing as 38 sc crimped brass meaning you never have to swage it

9 major  offers almost the same performance for a fraction of the price but you have to pay a little more attention the brass prep.

i can literally shoot 38sc until the hull cracks and i have definitely shot like 10x fired brass before

with 9 major you dont have that option, if you are reloading you might get 2 or 3 times out of the same used brass.

Given your GM levels of shooting are you noticing the difference between 38sc vs 9mm. And if so what are you seeing as advantages of one over the other..

    Thanks

i like 38 sc because its flatter, and thats what im set up with.

There was a time when i shot 9 major and i went back to 38 sc

Id say at like A class or above whichever one you use isnt going to be what makes you win or lose matches.

i got 3rd overall shooting 38sc my buddy who shoots 9 major took high overall.

Its all what you feel comfortable with and how much work you put into it.

i will say whichever one you choose just make that your thing. practice with it. experiment with different loads and powders. i mean really put your all into learning the system

once you have learned the system its just a mental game of making the gun an extension of yourself

Only if you are using the wrong powders and/or too short an OAL.  If you look at the VV loading manual in the 9x21 section you will see loads that make major within SAAMI specs.  Loading 9mm to 1.161" OAL gives you the same case capacity as a 9x21.  If you load long and use slower powders like AA7 or SWMP your pressures are low.  Somewhere in the standard to +P range.   I've been running 10.2gr SWMP under a 115 HAP or Zero for two years.  No issues with the load or the guns.

does that major pistol make your gun dirty as all hell?

i have 16 lbs of it i bought spare when AA7 was impossible to find

I've been using 9mm star line brass for the last six months and both my guns run very consistently. HS-6 is lower pressure and meters well. 38sc is a tiny bit flatter but doesn't necessarily make your skills better. .

if that tiny bit flatter leads to better follow ups on target it could make you better

but youre right i mean thats not going to be what holds anyone back at all

just like a 1.5 lb trigger vs a 2 lb trigger isnt going to be what wins stages and matches

Happens because people don't load right

i mean i did several weeks of load testing and dev and arrived at 168 pf with my 9 major load

the comp still cracked and so did the slide

the issue is the case space being so limited it leads to insane pressures

Thanks man, I have an Akai in 9mm been on the fence about a 39SC open gun but the cost of brass and availability always comes up but yet we shell out 7k to 8k on these blasters 🤷

i had a 9 major barrel cut for this akai, but the manufacturer removed too much material on the comp which cracked it, then wouldnt replace it, which also directly led to a cracked slide.

there are great guns if you can get one without any major issues

I’m pretty disappointed in the “hyped” up underwhelming video that he did. The new technology in the SV open guns is a night and day difference over their older guns especially a 9mm. To me that’s worthy of some cool marketing which they didn’t even need to do a lot of. If you’re going to have a 2.0 then make it worthy of the name.

what thats not true they hired a well known porn star to handle marketing :D

if i wasnt a fan of sv before i def am now that they have her on board

The cost of the Erebus and Artemis are right around what I paid for my Chaos a few years back so it would be expected that the new Chaos would be higher in price.  In terms of price and the way inflation is going, $8k in a year may be the same as $6.5k in 2019.  Right now, it is outside of my price range and the v2 isn't going to make me shoot better.

Are Infinity hand fit or is Atlas aspiring to be like Infinity?  I know Atlas seems more transparent with the way they build.  There are still some hand fit process as the barrels on my guns are not interchangeable.  I accidentally swapped barrels/slide and could not put it back together.  The machines do most of the work but not all of it.

    Atlas isn't hand fit anymore.

    Limcat still does hand fitting

Svi probably does some hand fitting

Atlas is aspiring to make as much money as possible while cranking out the cheapest and lowest amount of effort guns

Sadly it's basically where almost all smith's end up once they get a taste of the money of the competition world

  13. Alright after watching the video I have some thoughts

    1. Extra beveling around the muzzle and comp-makes it pretty to look at but 100% unnecessary and also adding to the cost for no real reason

    2. 3 or 4 oz heavier? Why? Just because you are swinging around a sledge hammer doesn't always mean its going to feel better. The previous generation was perfectly fine weight wise. I've been shooting open for 2 years and I've found that the perfect gun weight is between 50 and 52 oz. Heavier and transitions suffer until you get used to it

3.non stroked? Why? He says it's because it's a new frame...but I mean realistically it's just a long frame and people have been using long frames and stroking for years...what year are we in that they are trying to sell a base model for that price?

    4. The grip panels seem gimmicky. There's nothing wrong with the aggressive grips. I guess some people might be attracted to the idea of decorating their panels and putting all sorts of bulls#!t in there, but again what was wrong with the previous design

    5. Still a single sided mount with no drill holes on the other side? Why not at least give people the option?

    6. Also did that trigger guard look undercut at all? It looks super flat which again means not really any type of upgrade worth that price.

    7. Still no hybrid barrel model? I mean I would have liked to see 3 or 4 holes for 38 sc and 2 is fine for 9major but I mean hybrid barrels hit your hand completely different. I know some will say "yea what about the longevity of the slide" but for this price point believe me when I tell you would be better prepared to buy a new slide when it cracks. For 9k, id expect at least the option

    8. New panel cuts might wow new comers to the open game, but they literally only exist to reduce the slide weight. Doesn't matter to me if they are triangles, circles, rectangles or squares. As long as they accomplish the goal it works. And let's not act like that "new panel cut" is anything more than putting it on a cnc machine and programming it to do the work. It's not as if the gunsmith is hand cutting those with files.

In conclusion. It's a nice gimmick. But I just don't see what makes the gun worth svi or Eddie money. For 8k you can buy all the parts to two guns and have a local Smith make you two open guns.

  14. Yea for 8k I'm going with svi.

In fact for 8k I'd probably get a local builder to build two open guns

Also for the record some of us old guys don't have Facebook or insta
